1930 Coupe Seat adjustment???

I am 6'1" and it is really a tight fit in my 1930 coupe. I noticed there is about a 4" space between the top of the seat and the back window and there is some sort of a deck there. Question: Is there any way to remove this deck and move the seat back any?

Today the car gets trailered 165 miles to its new home in the country and after I get the exhaust manifold/gasket problem fixed I plan to hit the back roads. I may have a question or two after I tear into that.

Thanks for all the help. It is really appreciated.

Yes, that is the parcel tray. I have heard of long-leggers pulling these out, but have never seen it.

In order to remove it, you need to remove some of the interior side panels, especially the curved ones that wrap from the back of the side windows to the back window. Also, the panel under the rear window. This will reveal the wood screws that secure it in place. There is a bracket on either side, and a long one across the back.

You will likely want to put some covering between the back of the seat and the back wall to isolate the passenger compartment from the trunk, otherwise you will get noise, dust, etc.

You would also need to modify the seat base so it will move back further. New holes would need to be drilled for the seat to attach to the slider (six each side), and you would likely have to do something with the adjustment knob to give you more travel.

Good luck.

On Minerva, I carefully sawed 4" out of the package tray, & just the width of the seat back. Then drilled out ALL the rivets that hold the seat riser to the floor & moved the WHOLE seat assembley back 4" & bolted it to the floor. After trimming the package tray upholstered panel, it looked like it came from the factory that way. Don't have any real good pics.
If anyone needs leg room in a '28 or '29 Coupe, here's what I did & nothing was "butchered" & can be back to stock in 10 minutes. Bill W.
(They're bar stool seats, with swivels from Bass Pro Shops. This would work in a pickup, also. The panels are 3/4" plywood, bottom panel has a piano hinge & opens to the "tool box" in the riser.)
