1930 Coupe Colors

While removing a few small parts from my late 1930 standard Coupe I found the original color...which i thought was black but turns out the original color looks redish brown or maybe maroon. I'm not sure what color it is ? Was Maroon used on late 1930 coupes ? What color would the pin strip and wheels be ? I know all fenders were black.

Thanks

Maroon was not listed for a standard coupe. It may likely be Thorne Brown. Stripe is orange but may have been changed to cream late in the year. I don't have my JS with me. Wheels were originally black on all standard coupes.

As Steve indicated, Maroon was only used on Deluxe Coupes. It is not shown for any Standard Coupe. Could you be seeing primer? If there is any witness of the stripe, that would give you a good clue. Another clue would be the color of the overspray on the top inside of the of the firewall which is normally not painted during a respray. Gar Williams

I would concur with Steve that it is likely Thorne Brown however I guess it would depend on exactly which small pieces you are removing since these bodies were painted after partial assembly.

Gary, come up sometime for a visit.

Thanks for the invite Brent ! The parts I removed were the door garnish and also looked under the dovetail at the door frame. I first thought it was primer as i know the last owner did spray red primer over most of the body before paintng it with cheap spray paint. I cleaned off the spots and added a dab of wax and they really shine ! There isn't any other paint under this color so I'm sure its the orig paint. I guess it does look more brown than maroon ? I will look at the inside of the firewall and see what i find. Thanks for the help everyone !

I just looked at my JS and the Paint Guide. The correct stripe for Thorne Brown on a 1930 standard coupe is Tacoma cream. Orange stripe was used on roadsters and phaetons in 1930.

Gary,

The MAFCA paint & finish guide is a valuable reference for cheap money. The paint chips within the guide will give you the various options for specific year and body type, wheels, pinstripes, etc. Also, if you had a physical piece it could be analyzed at a reputable auto paint distributror for a close match.

Best of luck,

Thanks guys, plan on getting the MAFCA paint guide. Anyone have any pics of a coupe painted Thorne Brown ? I can see some of it on my door garnish but not enough to be able to tell if i lke it.
