1930/31 stone guard

Just a question. I was looking to buy a stone guard for the front shell and they are asking what year. 1930 or 1931. My briggs was made in Nov of 1930. It is a 1931 but I am finding 1930 parts on the car. This car was never redone. Is there a difference between 1930 and 1931 shells?
Thanks for any replies.
Frank

I believe they were same size for 30-31 although the '31 had painted front insert panels top and bottom. '30 had solid stainless top with painted bottom.

The reason being is that the Ford emblem is at different heights. If your radiator does not have the inserts it is a 1930 if it has an top is an insert it is a 1931

And there are a lot of '31's that have '30 radiator shells. Some prefer them since the 30 is all bright metal, and the 31 isn't.

My 31 has a 30 shell on it. It was that way when I bought it. I do have a 31 shell, but it's not a nice looking, so for now the 30 shell is going to stay put.

Several yrs. ago I purchased a stone guard for my 31 SW Cabriolet. I received one & the emblem didn't line up with the cut out & the tabs for the brackets didn't line up with the grommet holes in the radiator shell. I had several other shells & found the 31 grommet holes varied from the 30 shells. I returned the orig. stone guard & was sent another which fit much better. I still had to slightly twist the tabs so the hooks would fit better.

Thanks for the replies.
I am not sure what you mean by inserts. I am new to this and please forgive me if I might be dumb on some things I ask. I'm learning. Here is a picture of my shell.

The one above is a 30 shell
The one below is a 31 shell
Notice the black insert at the top as opposed to all stainless on the 30

Mac's web site show's dim.'s as = 1930 - 19" W X 30 3/4 " L , and 1931 - 19" W X 30 1/2" L . 1/4" difference in height .

pennies4pennies---your headlight reflectors look good are they the new ones that Bratton's sells?

First I want to thank everybody for the help. I now know what to order. As for the headlight reflectors go. They are original head lights. I did rebuilt the inside and polished the reflectors with mothers polished. They were very dirty and still I'm not really happy with them. I might get them chromed. I am trying to keep the car as original as possible. I have been repairing every part that I can possible do.

Chrome is not good for reflectors, just get some of the new ones from Brattons.

Brattons is not to far from me and they do ship very fast. But I think I would like to keep original as possible. I guess chrome or nickel plating is not good. Maybe I'll have them silver plated. If not I'll keep them as they are. By the way I have a 1928 motor in the car now and I do have another 1928 block/trans/bell and a few more parts to sell. I got a pile of extras with this car including 11 rims lol. I'll have to post it were it belongs, as soon as I find it. Thanks guys.

Hi Frank,

FWIW, Humble Opinion on Stone Guard Hardware:

My 1930 Briggs Town Sedan, (very close to original), came with a nice stone guard whereby everything fitted perfectly with old time hardware & old time rubber bumpers.

Removed my vintage stone guard & vintage hardware to clean my radiator inside & out.

From a very reputable Model A vendor, I bought a new stone guard hardware mounting kit which arrived with the notorious Democrat brand name of "Vintique".

Cut off & removed the old rubber nice fitting existing bumpers & removed old metal hardware and installed my newly purchased "Vintique" rubber bumpers & new metal hardware.

New "Vintique" Stone Guard Hardware Fit ?????

Most here already know the "Vintique" story.

Honestly, in my humble opinion, like anything else from "Vintique":

Fits about as badly as an expensive 2013 Neiman Marcus custom designed leak proof pregnant wild west buffalo brassiere placed on a set of 25 year old ******* Model's ****.

Just a kindly submitted heads up on what to expect from today's stone guard hardware.

Hi there: a Newbi question: I have a '29 tudor and wish to know if there is/was a stone guard for this year and would a '28 rad shell be the same as mine? Thanks for your time, Wayne.

Re: 1930/31 stone guard wire guage

Hi Guys

Can anyone tell me the wire thickness of the stone guard and the size of the individual squares. Im in South Africa and with the current exchange rate it is not feasable to purchase a stone guard so am hoping to make one for now

The shape around the 28 crank hole is oval, and it's bell shaped for 29.

The bell shape crankhole shell also has larger holes for the larger conduits to carry 3 wires to the new TWOLITE headlamps.

There were no stone-guards made for the 1928 and 1928 Ford Model A radiators. For the most part, the '28 & '29 radiator shells are pretty much interchangable in both bit and function, as well as looks. As Tom aludes to above, for the 'show' or purist, there is a subtle nuance of differance in the crank hole shape.

If you would like a Stone-Guard for your radiator, the reproduction people have made a stone-guard, following the idea of the '30 /'31 Stone-guard, and it is available from all Model A Parts Houses. The modern-day Stoneguards will universally fit either the '28 or '29 radiator/shells. They do look sporty, but did not exist in the 1928 thru 1960 period.

If you are worried about the correctness of the crank-hole shape ('28 vs '29) then you should not wear a Stone-Guard on the radiator, as it too, would not be 'correct'.
