1930-31 Instrument Panels

My October 7, 1930 car (long running board aprons) has a '28- '30 oval speedo instrument panel. DeAngelis (page 55) states that this is original through October, 1930. It seems like it would have transitioned to the late panel by then. Wrong gas tank? Thanks for any input.

The gas tank did not change with the change of the speedo, only the instrument cluster. The oval speedo went thru Oct '30 and you have an early Oct car...normal.

The "GAS TANK" "DID CHANGE" with the speedometer and instrument panel . There are 2 different gas tanks. 1- will only take the oval speedometer [Early 1930 to mid 1930 ] and the other gas tank will only take the round speedometer [after Mid 1930 till end of "A"s]. I have yet to see a oval speedometer with the early dash on any car [maybe a truck] after Mid 1930 [Aug,Sept,Oct] .Both instrument panel's will NOT fit on the SAME tank. Its one or the other.I would love to see a picture of a orginial car with a oval speedometer after Aug.1930...J.S. has the Oval speedometer [early dash] thru July 1930]

My Sept 30 Delivery has the long splash aprons and the round speedometer instrument panel. Bought in 1971 all original. Looks like the classic change over period.

Mr. Salisbury Dave...

Help us here.

What does the measurment equal from the tank itself to the steering column bracket 1/2 way point (where the bottom half is screwed on)? 2-3/4 inches or 2-3/8 inches?

What does the embossing look like that retains the cowl band measure? 1/2 inch (3 of them) or 1 inch (3 of them) or no embosing on the tank or continious embosing?

Does your steering column bracket have 3 or 4 rivets for attachment to the bottom o the tank?

Hopefully with this information we can ID your tank...it may have been replaced at one time or it was just a fluke and was actually put on the car a time of assembly.

By the way...just how do you know it was assembled October 7, 1930? Just ciourious.

Thanks.

Pluck

PS...This will be featured in my last article about the gastanks sometime next year in Model A News.

I am going by what i have worked with ,I had a May 1930 Standard Roadster[unrestored at the time] with the later Dash round speedo[that means it was built sometime in April of 1930]. I have a Jan. 1930 standard fordor with a oval dash [built sometime in Nov. 1929] . I had upto a week ago a June 1930 Deluxe Phaeton with a round speedo later dash[ that means built sometime in May 1930].I have a Aug 1930 Deluxe Phaeton again with a round speedo later dash [Built sometime in Late June /July]. So i have never seen a orginial 1930 Deluxe Roadster with a oval speedo. I did here about 3 Deluxe Phaetons with oval speedo which puts them being built sometime in April/May 1930. They also have RARE steel Chrome plated Stanchions. So if someone tells me they have a Oct 1930 "A" with oval speedo its kinda hard to believe it was orginial that way. I could be wrong and it would not be the first time so Anyone have any proof. thanks

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the bodies painted after the tanks was installed? Mismatched color would tell me the tank was replaced at some time.

Thanks all of you for helping out on this question of gas tank and thus instrument panel on a Oct. car.

To answer Pluck's questions: The depth of the steering bracket is 2 3/8". The cowl band embossing is 1". The bracket has 3 rivets. I did not mean to imply that the car was assembled in early Oct. The engine and frame numbers are 4021233 so it could have been assembled several weeks later as I understand it.
The car was "restored" previously and the tank was probably changed to an incorrect one. At least that is what it looks like now.

Thanks again.

* There are combinations of this “C” tank and “B” tank in the early production period only. See text.

All of this will soon be coming out in a future 2011 Model A News.

The round speedo and associated parts went into full production the second half of June 1930 at the same time they released the new commercial bodies with 1930 styling.
