1929 Running Board rubber replacement

I am hoping for some advice before undertaking the replacement of the rubber on the running boards of my 1929 Phaeton. Is there any there significant difference in the quality or originality of the rubber currently being offered? Is it possible to remove and reuse the zinc moldings? Are any special tools or techniques advisable?

On my 28 special coupe, I used contact cement that you brush on - Weldwood, if I remember correctly. It was a pain! I kept getting bubbles under the rubber matting. After a lot of effort, I finally got the bubbles out, but it was a long, tough job. On my 29 phaeton is used 3M 94 spray on adhesive and it worked great. I used small wood boards between the matting and the running board to keep the 2 apart until the alignment was perfect, then removed one stick at a time until all the sticks were removed. I then used a medium sized rubber roller to press the rubber to the running board. It worked out very well.
