1929 Pickup Radiator Shell Questions

I have a couple of questions related to my 1929 CCPU.

1. I understand the shell is supposed to be gloss black even though mine is chrome. I have not seen a gloss black one for sale anywhere. They just sell chome or stainless steel. Any idea how i am supposed to get a black one? Seems wierd to buy a chrome or SS one and paint it.

2. I see many A's with stone guards screens in front of the radiator shell. Is this original? My truck has a fine mesh (1/4") screen between the radiator shell and the radiator itself. (see photo) Is this correct?

Your RPU with bright yellow paint is obviously a custom. Ya might as well leave the chrome shell on it. It does look better than a black shell would look on it.
 
The stone guard and the screen you have never came from the Ford factory. They were aftermarket accessories just like Western Auto or JC Whitney would sell.

You could strip the chrome and paint your shell, or try Bert's in Denver for the correct painted shell. Bert's 800-321-1931, and they are closed Sundays and Mondays.
 
Bob, I would recommend looking for a good shell at the swap meets. You can pick up a pretty good one that needs plating for a resonable price and then just sandblast and paint that one. Save your chrome one.

Mike's A-Ford-Able sells a "primered steel", not plated, radiator shell for $115. Part #A8200A in their current catalog, page 153.

Snyder's sells a "smooth steel", not plated, radiator shell for $102. Part #A8200SR in their current catalog, page 125.

None of these come prepainted so you will have to paint them gloss black.

A word of advice: None of the reproduction radiator shells will fit as good as an original.
