1929 Emergency Brake Handle

I have used the search function and cannot find my answer:

I recently acquired my dad's 1929 Tudor (55A - VIN 1443294; April 1929) and it is missing the emergency brake handle. I pulled the front carpet and see the following. I thought I would be using the push button front mount handle, but the ratchet in the picture is that of a 1928, using the squeeze lever-type handle.

Will someone confirm this and tell me what parts are needed to install the emergency brake?

A parts diagram or microfiche would help, but I cannot find one anywhere.

This is a photo of the handle you would need for your car. You could buy
a repop handle....but an original will fit and function better.

I would call Bert's in Denver, CO and get the correct handle and assembly and put it on! Steve will help you with all the correct parts needed.

What you need is the PUSH-BUTTON type (see Dudley's post) and NOT the SQUEEZE GRIP TYPE of handle.

Thanks guys. Is there no microfiche or diagram of the parts needed for this, or any other section of these cars? The Les Andrews Mechanics book isn't quite clear to this newbie. I appreciate your input. What parts in addition to the handle? --Jeremy

Within the handle itself there are at least 7 parts. If you talk to Steve at Bert's in Denver, I am sure, if you tell him, he will set you up with all you need to complete the assembly of the correct brake handel you are in need of.

There is not microfiche or diagram that I am aware of.

You will probably also need the A-2853 Emergency Brake lever to Cross Shaft Rod Assembly and the two (2) pins to attach it to the A-2797 Em. Hand Brake Lever Arm.

Tell Steve what you have...he will set you up with all the parts needed.

You may want to take a few more pictures to send on to Steve to make sure he knows what you need. Like Pluck says, make sure you get everything you need while you are at it.

I was able to correspond via email with Steve and: "All (I) need is the handle with the pinch bolt on it. It fastens to the square part that is sticking out of (my) photo."

Thanks for the help, guys. --Jeremy

My June '29 Coupe has the squeeze handle, when did they change to the push button type?
Bill W.

Probably depended when they used all the old ones up & at what plant.
My Oct./Nov. Ontario built Tudor has the squeeze handle & most Canadian '29's here are the same.
Springtime in Canterbury, NZ.

I think on the US made 29s, in june they used a push button handle in front of the gearshift lever like Dudley has pictured. I believe from July untill end a push button handle mounted to the right side of the upper transmission housing was used. This is off the top of my head. Not being a show car type I don't keep the standards near my computor. My main quick referance is Brattons catalog. Yer brother Purdy

Out of the 2011 Standards it has this written,...." From January 1929
through July 1929 the hand brake lever was a push button type....".
I thought it carried over more(?)....if we factor in the 60 day rule then
it would/could be the beginning of March....if I have this correct....

Stick with Steve and you will get a lot of help along with good new and used parts.

Dudley, The judging standards that I have is falling apart and may be out of date. At the bottom of page 7-2 it has a date , march 1981 so is probably a candidate for the trash can , but here is what it says. Starting in december 28 production through july 1929 the emergency brake lever was changed to a push button handle mounted in front of the gear shift lever . From july 1929 through end of production the push button emergency brake handle was moved to the side of the gear shift. Purdy.

Purdy,
Ya,......that's good! Just add the 2011 change too "January", and your
good to go!

YAHOO! My June '29 IS correct ! Glad it's NOT a push button, on Minerva, when I got it adjusted tight enough to hold, I COULDN'T push the dang button. I carried a little block of 2x4 to WHACK it!

Bill,

Your June of 1929 car is suposed to have the PUSH BUTTON type of Emergency Brake Handle not the squeeze grip.
