1929 CC Pickup Steering Wheel Replacement

The area around my wheel is cracked and I've been trying to figure out how to remove the horn button, etc., to remove / replace the wheel. I did a search to see if instructions ha been previously posted - no luck.

Does anyone have the procedure to post?

Thanks!

You will have to remove the bail clip holding the wiring harness to the bottom of the steering column. There is a small C clip holding the U shaped light switch spider, push up on the spider to be able to slide out the clip. Now comes the hard part, I don't think there is enough room in the cab to slide the rod all the way out. You may have to loosen the bolts at the frame and remove the gas tank clamp. There is a good set of instructions in the Les Andrews Book. I repaired mine before I put the cab on the frame.

The best way is to remove the steering column. The horn rod will not come out undamaged in a closed cab pickup or coupe.

Thanks, looks like This is more complicated than I thought. But I'm concerned about the cracks in the wheel leading to failure because it takes so much twisting at the center to turn the wheel at rest and something less at low speed.

Thanks again!

As Vanspeed said, the steering wheel is made of steel and given a coating for comfort. It won't break due to the cracks in the coating.

Also, it's a good idea to never turn the steering wheel while standing still. Even slow moving will allow the tires to move much easier and relieve stress on the steering parts as well as the gas tank mount. Even on modern cars with power steering I don't turn the steering wheel unless the car is moving.
