The ring gear bevel should face the rear of the car. This lets the starter pinion engage easier.

A friend accidentally put a ring gear on backwards on an ooold M.G. I suggested he try brushing the flywheel teeth with a mixture of wheel bearing grease & white lead. It worked PERFECTLY for years! The M.G. used an inerta type bendix, very similar to a Model A. Bill W.
