1928 Open A/ Ford pickup

We have an all original 1928 A/R open pickup. This truck was one of the first ones made and has several Model T parts on it. is there anyone on the forum that is familiar with these. i will become the 6th original owner, as my father is giving it to me. the truck originally came from a museum in Milwaulkee wisconsin owned by the Schlitz family. The last time the truck ran was on my wedding day 16 years ago, and it has been in dry storage since then. Mt goal is to get it running again. Needs tires, and battery, and whatever else I find. I am new to model A's, but have restored several antique tractors. Any info on the truck will help. I am also getting a 1929 model A 2 door coupe that is completely original, and hasn't run in at least 22 plus years.

Welcome! I have a 28 AR sport coupe. The AR's are an odd lot with several funny model T quirks. give me a yell if I can be of assistance.

You peaked my interest. What parts are there that are Model T?
I know a lot were similar but don't know of any on an open pickup. The closed cab has some.

Is your 1929 "2-door coupe" a Standard Coupe (45-A) or a Special Coupe (49-A)?

Special Coupes (49-A) has fabric down the quarter panels and around the rear and quarter windows...the Standard Coupe (45-A) does not.

OR could it be a Sport Coupe (50-A) or a Business Coupe?

Just where do you live? There may be a local Model A Ford Club near you.

Also, join the two national clubs, MARC and MAFCA, get a copy of the MARC/MAFCA Restoration Guidelines, and the Les Andrews books on how to restore your "A"s.

Are these vehicles original originals or restored to original?

Pluck

The 29 coupe is a standard . I am in Peoria Illinois. the 28 A/R truck I believe has model T wheels, and some other parts. Both vehicles would be restored originals.

the 29 car had a baseball size heavy object fall out of a barn loft and ripped a hole through the canvas roof, otherwise it is in good condition no rust, but has some faded and peeling paint. It sits nice and straight also, doesn't look all beat down. I am replacing all 4 tires and tubesjust to be able to move it, and bring it to my shop to start working on it.

Craig,

There is a Model A Club (MAFCA) in Peoria, called Fourever Fours...go to the "STICKY" above that has website information and you can find out more abou it.

The "T" wheels that you describe MAY be the "EARLY" type of "A" wheels.

We are restoring a Jan 5, 1928 Model A Sport Coupe. While it does not have any Model T parts on it that I can see, there may be some things that I can send you photos of that might assist you in your repair/restoration, ...and we also just finished an Oct '28 RPU. You can see more pic of it by clicking here.

Hello Charles and craigreavley,
I am looking for information regarding the tail lamp bracket used on the early pickup.

Attached is a picture of the bracket used on the early AA platform (i.e. 1927 and early Jan. 1928. Is this bracket also used on the early pickup? It would have been mounted on the pickup cross member under the body.
Regards,
Neil Wilson

I have always heard that Henry never threw out anything that could be used. I often read of parts from T's were used on the early A's. Hood handles, brackets, etc.

Welcome to the Fordbarn. I also have an early 28 open cab pickup as you can see in my avatar. I have been learning that there are a lot of different and changing things on the early 1928 cars and trucks. Take Charles up on his offer. He sent me a bunch of information that I had no clue existed.

Neil: your bracket is very different from mine. from what i can determine (cast into the arm itself), mine is the (A13470) TAIL LIGHT (DRUM STYLE) AND LICENSE BRACKET SUPPORT
A13468: tudor
A13470A: panel delivery, pickup, AA chassis
A13471A: ’28 coupe (standard, sport, special, business)
A13473: phaeton, tudor, deluxe delivery
Above info from JStandards (1997 rev) Pg 18-2/3 and 1-1-28 Parts Book

SORRY for my sloopy work/misinfo above: my 1-1-28 Parts Book only lists
A13470: Rdst, Coupe, S Coupe
A13473: phaeton, tudor, fordor

am always open to correction on my info but remember, mine has the phaeton style subrails that run under the PU bed (i suspect the panel delivery does as well but have never seen one), so the drum TL is mounted under the bed rather than at the side after the subrails had been replaced with wood struts. once the cast arm is mounted, i dont see any other way to mount the tag bracket to the arm ... but am open to suggestions.

Yes, the Ford archive photos of the early pickup has the tail lamp under the pickup body (not on the side). So, the bracket must go downward and to the right to give room for the drum style tail lamp.

I have a March 1928 archive photocopy which shows this. The only thing which can be seen in the pictures if the bottom half of the license plate.

i too have an ar roadster truck it had the phaeton sub hails wich had ben welded just back of cab at the time i did not know about henry useing phaeton rails on early rdspu i thaugh some one had cobble up something so that part wont be orignal on my ar i sawed them off before i took the bed of
