This is a 1929 Model A Ford phaeton body on a 1928 Model A Ford chassis. I will have more and better photos in a few days. I am 140 miles from home waiting for the heavy late snow to melt from the roads so I can tow a trailer safely. I decided to start this listing while I am waiting for the roads to get better.
I recently found this car about 10 miles south of the Canadian border in north western North Dakota. This body was built in Canada because it has the typical Canadian square drive or "clutch head" trim screws. The chassis is of 1928 vintage and may still have its original engine. It has the earlier AR style of brake drums and comes with one early style AR wheel and 3 later style 1928-1929 wheels. The engine still turns over and I will add the engine number to this listing when I get home in a couple of days.
The body rear tub and both rear doors still wear the original dark paint and even have some of the original light colored pin stripe intact. The front doors are from a 1928 body because they have no outside door handles. I suspect someone robbed the original front doors for a roadster a long time ago. All 4 doors are very nice solid and straight doors.
A very nice pair of NOS original Ford rear fenders are included. I have 2 or 3 more pair of NOS 1928-1929 sedan or touring car rear fenders available if you need some. The front fenders are not shown yet and look good on the outside but are not very good on the inside. The bondo on the outside of the front fenders makes them look a lot better than they really are. Fair used running boards and splash aprons are also included but not shown yet. The running board brackets are of the earlier forged style rather than the later stamped steel style.
The cowl is from an early 1928 (AR style) roadster or touring and has the hole in the left-hand body sill for the earlier style left-hand mounted emergency brake lever. The cowl is bolted rather than riveted to the front of the body sills as it would have been originally. There is some rust in the bottoms of both sides of the cowl. There is a very nice rust free mid-1928 through 1929 style cowl that is included with this project but is not shown in the photos yet.
The rear floor is very solid and totally rust free. There is a tiny (about 1/8" diameter) rust hole at the very bottom of the back center of the rear tub. The front floor is not very solid but only has no holes in it yet. There are some rust holes in the upper rear part of the front seat curtain pan that one can see from the rear seat area.
I do not yet have any top irons or bows for this gem in the rough and would appreciate any help you could give me in locating some. I will pay $100 for a lead that results in the purchase of a top assembly for this car. I followed up on a post advertising a nice top assembly on Fordbarn.com a few months ago. That lead resulted in the purchase of a nice older restored 1933 Ford phaeton so that is why I am listing this very nice Model A project here at this time.
I am selling this project with a bill of sale and no title at this time. I have a very nice numbers matching 1929 Model A Ford chassis that I will sell for $2,500 if anyone would rather build this car as a 1929 rather than a 1928. I can get a current open Montana title for either chassis but will have to charge another $300 due to the cost of the surety bond that is now required to get such a title here in Montana.
A local friend is heading east to Ohio with an enclosed trailer in 10 days or so and may be able to safely and economically deliver this vehicle to you depending on where you live along his route. I will be adding more photos and information to this listing in the next few days so please check back here occasionally.
I was not able to upload some photos yet but can email them if you are interested. Thanks a lot, Bob Woodburn in Bozeman Montana USA 4O6-799-!847
