1914

Just bought a 1914 touring.
It is a manual start only. I need to install a small battery to charge the coils.
Does any one use a 12V motorcycle battery for this?
It runs just fine on the mag.

I use a standard 12 V battery to activate the coils when I start my 19 T because I have a few extra's. My dad used a lantern battery and many people use motorcycle batteries. You can even use one of the batteries that come with the kids electric cars. So it is pretty much up to what fits in the space you have available.

BTW i do not have a starter

If the magneto is good enough you can start without a battery on MAG. But Ford was realistic enough to provide for battery starting. The cheapest 6 or 12 volt will do.

If the battery is only for "energizing" the coils to aid in starting, look into a small, sealed type 12 volt used for electric trailer brakes. Fun Projects manufactures a nifty battery charger that utilizes the magneto for recharging a small battery - worth the effort to look into.
