1914 Low Compression Problems Update

Last fall "the Barn" offered great comments on how to proceed with my Model T that was very difficult to start and had low compression. Many of the head bolts felt soft with the torque wrench, some being as low as 35 ft-lbs. This past April I started the job of removing the cylinder head and fire wall so that I could get access to all the bolt holes. It took a long time but I installed Helicoils in every hole. I made up hardwood jigs to be sure the drills stayed vertical to the head. I had the head planed to be sure it was flat. Last week I assembled the head and was able to torque every hole to 50 ft-lbs.

The job was worth it, the car starts easier and has a bit more power. Hopefully it will stay this way. Thanks for all your great comments. Helicoils are definitely a good idea for any Model T. Ed
