It will misfire when I have the spark lever either at 10:30 or 8:30 or anywhere in between. Checked the wiring especially in the timer area and all appears well. Have not yet installed new capactors (sp) in the coils. Cleaned and adjusted spark plugs. Suggestions? thanks! Skolzie

You mean it misfires constantly? First find out which cylinder it is by shorting out the wire at the plug with the engine running. Groung screwdriver to the head and lean the shaft toward the plug . Look for a spark at each plug. A weak or no spark condition will show which cyl. isn't firing. This could be a coil or a timer that's dirty internally. If you find a bad cyl. swap the coils around. If the misfire moves to another cyl. it's a bad coil. If sparking is normal/equal between all cyls. Pull the timer and check/clean it out. New capacitors and HCCT testing are a must. I found out the hard way. The difference with properly set up coils is unbelieveable.

Check the oil pan bolt under the timer, There is one that will be obvious that needs to be upside down -- with the nut on the bottom. It can short one terminal of the timer with the result you describe. If this is not the problem check for a broken wire near the timer - such a wire can give an intermittant connection as it is twisted with the advance - retard action & again act as you describe.

Jack, check your engine in a dark garage and look at the coil box. (a mirror may be handy) If a coil gets a track to ground it will burn the wood in the coil box. Burned wood is carbon and
a new ground path has been created. This will drive you crazy. Plastic box liner replacements are sold by Fun Products Co. This will cure the problem.

Many thanks to CharlieB, Jack, and Lee. Will do the checkouts as suggested. Am presently planning on the plastic liner and new condensers. thanks again! Skolzie
