Hi guys,

We have a 1914 T touring that has a 1913 windshield on it that folds forward. Yes it is a 1914 bodied car. We have tried changing the hinges around and switching it around but it will not work right to fold back towards the driver like it should for a 14. What exactly is the difference in the parts for a 14 so that the windshield will fold back? I know the hinges mount in reverse from the 13 but are the hinges a different part. Also the top windshield sections appear to have different drip edges, the bottom metal strip is more squared off on the 14 and not curved like the 13.

Can I simply find a 14 top section and reverse the hinges to convert what I have?

Thanks for any help you may have.

Before you change things around, is your car an early 1914 with a left-over 1913 windshield? I have seen that before.

Chris, We don't know for sure. The engine has no serial numbers, the body has a tag under the front seat cushion that shows 4 - 14. We believe the car was originally assembled in California. We also think the engine may be a factory replacement? it has original std bore cast iron pistons and a 1913 casting date. It is a very original car with nearly all the proper 1914 parts. It may have originally been assembled with the 13 windshield, but we will never know. We would like the proper 14 windshield setup as it is also easier and safer to put up and down. Thanks, Mike, Greenville, Mi.

Theres probably a half a dozen different hinge models over the years. Look at this set on my speedster. There are 11 (eleven) detent positions with one leg longer on the cowl frame leg. I had another set where the legs were equal with 6 detents. ws

You will need the '14 w.s. brace rods which have a bend in them for the w.s. frame to clear as you pull it towards you - the '13 braces are straight in profile. The '14 hinge is peculiar as it has double bump detents where as the one in Bill's hinge photo show singular bumps.

Well we figured it out today. We had the right hinges with the doubled bumps and the 1914 bent braces. I think the difference is the top portion of the windshield. We ended up taking the upper portion apart and drilling new holes for the hinge screws 1/2 inch different from the fold forward original setup and it works perfect. We are happy to have it done and folding back like it should for a 14. Thanks for your comments and help.
Attached is a picture taken during the test drive this afternoon and the hinge.
