180A Dash Rail Question

Hello, I bought a 180A body the other day and found the dash rail is missing. Will any 30-31 open car dash rail fit?

Thanks,

Brian

Yes,,,1930,31 Roadster /Phaeton will fit. Repro will not fit well. Plan on working it so it can. To find a good original that you can use is very hard .Do you have front seat frames? Buy from A+L PARTS the door ZINC floor sills plates now.He make a run of only 25 if you should need them.

Thanks for the info, and yes, the sill plates are gone too. I will be building it in a strict pre-WWII dry lakes hot rod style so at least I do not have to collect every NOS OEM doo-dad known to you guys. How about a wood kit? The minimal research I have done indicates I will be spending over 2K on a complete kit.....any suggestions there?

HenryJ, Welcome to the Ford Barn! Sounds like a nice project. There is a photo that comes to mind of a 180A racing on a Dry Lake back in the 1930's. When I find it I'll post it.

It has some surface rust but no real cancer.

HenryJ HOT ROD STYLE....I sold a 180a body last year just for that. Art is in California ,,which he is the second guy who is working on one. Don also has 1 and had it last year at the flats. Classic Wood fits but with some work ..There's Jim in Illinois who make the BEST wood kit for the 180a AND FIT RIGHT. But your doing a rod so your use to work so classic would work..l.o.l...who ever is close to you for shipping is good too. My email is peters180a@aol.com ,,,and i might still have updated pictures of Arts 180A. and Dons too. He posted a few here. good luck...they all did steel sub frames so you do not need ZINC door stills at $250.00 a pair. Also use Brookville roadster dash rail ...forget about finding a original.

Peter, when did you start walking on the Dark Side, you could get tossed out of the Fine Point crowd for these statements.

Peter, I started thinking I might be able to use a tudor subrail assembly. The wood around back is still usable. Are there pictures on this message board available from the 2 guys you mentioned in your comment?

i think Don showed them at one time way back. I'll see if my computer minded daughter could take them off my email and show them here???? She is working late. Mr.Roadster62 for your info. i was in rodding before i had a drivers license.Lost my drivers licence drag racing before i was 17 [ street in front of Kings Dept.store in Stamford Conn.]. 1/8 mile on Long ridge road and 1/4 mile on High ridge road, hutch parkway ...you know the good old days of the390. 396,454,427,428 cobra jet 440,..My friend at the time[Barry Nelson] in 1969 bought a 1932 ,3 window coupe ford from Bronx speed shop and i would love to know where that car is today? It was a old time race car from the early 60's...

Peter are you sure that '32 was a 3Window? There was a HEMI powered 5Window that was in Yonkers originally. Engine was removed and placed in a rail that crashed and killed the kid at king's in Stamford. That is a Coupe I'd like to find, metalic blue and a Rodding & Restyling cover car.

Anyone remember Paul's in Orange, racing on CT tpke near Secondi Bros, Savin Rock?? A little off topic but door was opened. Have a great night.
Paul in CT

No Paul, but I've been told the Ct Turnpike was an unofficial drag strip durring construction. When you think about it it must have been fairly safe compaired to the King's shopping center in down town Stamford.

Roadster62 , 1 took the original race engine out of the coupe in 1971 .It was a 1957 Pontiac fuel injected setup and had Tri-power. Dropped it off at Yonkers engine rebuilders back then. Shop guy said for me not to waste my time working on it. Think i was told a 392 0r 390 something like that block??? to far back. Nice chrome all over..Anyway its buried along side my fathers home:>( 1973). We use to set up racing on New England thruway[95] ...3 cars would pull onto a entrance before the next exit and slow down the traffic.[this was like 11:00 at night] and the racers would come onto the thruway and go at it till the next exit.. crazy **** we did ..And then there was Westchester airport runway...anyway heading to a car show with the "A" to fund a estate off the Hudson river..cuts $$$ are being made everywhere.

Hey, you guys hi-jacked my post! Back to the topic, Peter do you have any close-ups of your interior including the back seat floor area? And also, is the correct front seat a bench that the back folds down on? Any answers are appreciated.

No bench front seat... 2 bucket seats that fold forward to let people in the back... Back seat floor area??? under the seat???[pretty much flat with ribs and a opening for the rear spring to come thru with a cloth cover[white duck] or before the back seat??? [floor tub with ribs same as 400A[Conv. Sedan] and 190A[Vicky].If you are going to Dry lake car you will not need this pan because of the drivetrain. The other 2 guys made up a better pan. They also do not use the back seat! 2 seater [front] with a cover over the back[gas tank ] and small trunk area.No top irons or top..Art is i think making a California top for his car[one piece hard top like the early "T" Birds and Vettes].Like i said send me your email and i'll hook you up with these guys. They are in your league ..I am bone stock original..

Thanks for the description. I was indeed talking about the "footwell" in front of the back seat, and is there a difference between 2 door sedan front seats? When I am done my car will look like a kid bought it used in 40 and took the fenders off, then added a hi-compression head. That is what I mean by pre-war hot rod. No rat-rod but a faithful recreation of an early, early hot rod. Thanks again.

The pass. side of a Vicky [30, early 31)is the same size and mounting. And the drivers side will do too ,its 17" wider at the top,,,, mounting is the same ///16" for both 180A sides and 190a [Vicky pass side] Tudor seats can work but you would need to mount them different. ]different hinge setup.

Have you desided on keeping the splash aprons? If it were 1940 and a kid drove his full fendered car to the Dry Lakes it wouldn't take long to strip the four fenders, but the aprons are another story. I've seen a few A's with the aprons and like the look. Knocking your shin on the running board bracket would be a problem, so manbe removing the rivets and making them bolt on would be the way to do it.

Now we're talkin'. Peter, you're the man. Thanks for the info. I will probably use tudor seats based on price and availability. Roadster, I also like the splash apron look but have decided against using them. I want to see the mechanical brake rods right out in the open.

Ask around to find out how to make Tudor seats confortable to sit on before you spend a lot on money on upholstery.
