12v ballast resistor

A 3 ohm epoxy filled coil can be readily found. An oil coil will work but they don't like to be tipped upside down, so, maybe, you could point it skyward and it'll be happy. All that said, many an oil coil has been used in our old As without issue, but, some not.

Very nice explanation of coils and their operation "rotorwrench". An older highly toxic dielectric used in the manufacture of coils was polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). These are ban from use in the US but who knows what is used in the offshore stuff we buy. Another point I would like to make is that not all coils can be inverted like some of the earlier styles. Some modern day coils will short out over time if mounted inverted. I believe it has to do with the type of dielectric used and/or its orientation inside the casing.

Dioxin ? Yep, nasty stuff.

Years ago a transformer exploded in a NYS office building and Governor Hugh Carey [ nitwit] said there was nothing to worry about and he would drink a glass of PCB. I said I'd pay to see that, he didn't think it was funny.

Dioxin was sprayed all over that wonderful scenic southeast Asian country during the 60's and 70's. We're feeling its effects today. There were about 10 Agents, the nastiest being know as Orange.
