Do you have a 12 volt system?I installed a 12 volt starter in my 36 and I want to reduce the RPM so the Bendix drive doesn't hit the flywheel so hard and reduce the noise. I am sure others have this problem.
Don't know how an early starter is constructed but on my Merc engine I used the housing, field windings, brushes, end plate from a NAPA rebuilt Y block 12 volt starter. (about $50).
Took about 20 minutes and seems to have cut down the rpm

So does that mean you simply installed the flathead's armature in the case of the Y block starter? Sounds like something even I can do. Electrical stuff has always puzzled me the most.
