i have most of the parts for the 12volt conversion on my 41 ford with 8BA engine stock distributer, does condenser need be changed to 12v one if so anyone have a part # or year car that would work and my resistor is located under the dash circert braker,do i just replace it with a 12v resistor? thank guys have a great christmas..al
The old condenser is probably OK to use as is. The equivalent of 3 old power resistors connected in series are needed to drop 12 volts to 4 volts needed by the coil. In other words, you simply can't replace the old resistor with a 12-volt resistor without knowing its actual resistance. You might want to consider using a newer 12-volt coil.
It would be simpler to spend about $22 at NAPA for one of their IC14SB coils. You won't need ANY resistors, and you should feed that coil directly with 12 volts. Your old condenser will work just fine.
I found that the Echlin napa 12 coil IC13 works with the 8ba bracket because of dia,and the matching resister ICR13 is a 1.82 ohms resister. That can be mounted under dash or on coil bracket.By leaving the orginal resister under dash .5 ohms you take voltage from coil and may have hard starting.
I had these parts laying around and worked for me.
