12 Volt Alternator

I have made the decision to install a 12 volt alternator. Which set up is best and who to buy it from? Thanks

I'm sure you are going to hear all kinds of opinions on why you should stick with the stock generator or keep your car 6 volt. I respect your choice so I will not go there...

Most of the kits from the vendors use the GM 10si alternator and I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

My issue is I don't like the looks of a modern alternator on a Model A, be it 6v or 12v.

That is why I run a PowerGEN, an alternator built to look like the stock generator (even has a faux cutout). I have had my 12v PowerGen on my car for ~8 years now with "0" problems. They make a 6v model also. Not cheap.

I use 10SI 3 wire alternators and the Snyders mounting kits. Three wire setup uses an exciter wire that is remote from the alternator and detects low voltage. I always had trouble with the one wire alternators seeming to never start charging without revving up the motor. 10SI’s come in a hundred variations, but the mount and body can be ‘clocked’ every 90 degrees so the wiring connections are placed where you want. Just get one with the ampere rating you need. I’m no electrician, but these are simple enough for me.

Plus the 3 wire is easy to connect a charge indicator (idiot) light. :p
