12/7/41 Pearl Harbor Day

I met a guy a while back that landed in Normandy and I and that's the most honored I've ever been to meet anyone. Forget movie stars and singers they haven't done anything special,THE VETERANS ARE THE REAL HEROS.

RIGHT ON BROTHER. The scary things is that Americans become complacent too quickly. I hope that we never find ourselves in the same position again as we did on that fatefull day on December 7, 1941. GOD BLESS AMERICA

I was born 10 years after Pearl Harbor but many in my family that lived thru it have lots of memories. My dad went to sign up right after the attack but had perforated eardrums (4F) and ended up working at a GM plant in Pontiac MI getting military vehicles out for shipment to support the effort overseas. My uncle turned 18 in '42 and was promptly drafted and spent most of the rest of the war in the PTO. Wife's grandfather was a Chrysler Executive and was either Production or General Plant Manager at the old Jefferson Main Plant in Detroit. My wife's dad and uncle joined the Army in 1940 so were already 'seasoned' vets by 7 December. They were sent to the Aleutians as shore artillery gunners, then later transferred to the Solomon Islands for the duration. Below is a pic of them (dad in-law on left), taken with their mom probably in summer 1941 on shore of Lake St Clair Michigan:

It was a sad time in our history to have to watch all the young people go to war. My dad landed on Normandy what he calls D-Day + 2. He still chokes up when he thinks of all the friends he saw die on the beach. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge, sent to Africa for repairs & ended up getting Malaria. Then they sent hime to England for scout training & after that he & another guy would go out in advance & look to see where the Germans were at & report back to head quarters. He was with the 9th infantry Go Devils unit. He just turned 90 a month ago & is still in reasonable good health for a 90 year old. These men & women sure gave up a lot. Thanks to all who served & are serving today.
