does anybody know of a really good parts book for Ford trucks that cover from 1949 to 1953. I want to learn more about these trucks and I am lost, most of mine are pre-war and these are new to me.
 
Not factory, but the Carpenter and LMC catalogs have good breakdowns.
Also ,a reprint of the '49-'51 repair manual is out there, other years also maybe, check fleabay.
For the larger trucks, repair manuals show more.

Feel free to ask.... we might know. I've got a couple of F6's and an F4 - most of the stuff on your F5 is similar. The first gen F series are '48 to '52 and designated as F1 thru F8. F5 btw was the 1.5 ton
 
thanks for info-I got the 1951 running with just a little sticking lifters and a carb clean out-engine is an 8BA, which is wrong? should be an 8RT? The carb is solid but front fenders have the normal seam problem. Hood is very bad. The cab appears to be the same as a pick-up are the fenders/hood? What are the differences? Trans syncro?, how to find rear end ratio? single not two-speed. Has a Ford script bed, with tarp hooks, big hooks on front bumper, pintle hitch in back-was an Army truck.
Are the rims the "widow makers", my 41 has the lock rings and not the two piece style rims
 
8BA is right - same as the 8RT which some claim were the replacement heads - bottom line, nobody knows for sure.

Cab/hood/grill are the same F1-F6. Fenders are the same F2-F6. Only F1 fenders are unique with a smaller wheel cutout, otherwise the outer measurements are the same F1-F6 (I run F3 fenders on my F1 out of necessity)

Most of your questions are found in the specs section of the shop manual.

Regular trans was the 4 spd spur geared/straight cut gears that needs to be "double-clutched" when shifting. Optional trans were the 3 spd HD (synchro'd and 4 spd synchro'd.

Rear ratio - either 5.83 or 5.14 :1 for the single spd rear

The Ford Script bed is a plus!

Two piece rims are the widow-makers and most places won't re-mount tires on them. A search of this site should turn up lots of info on those wheels. Ask Stu (truckdog) about them.
 
Here are two pictures of my 1951 Ford Stake with 23,000 original and documented miles. Truck was restored about 15 years ago and is kept in our car museum, so looks the same as when new. We kept the original color. Truck was on an estate and used for hauling logs, etc. but the owner changed the oil regularly, so engine is like new.

Mine too - great truck fritz! The one in my avatar i bought as a parts truck, but it sits all summer and late fall we charge the battery, fire it up and plow snow all winter. It's been around about 7 years and still looks just as ugly as it does in the avatar....
 
mtflat, beauty is in the eye of the truck lover!! a budy of mine says it is so ugly that it is pretty got all the old wood off today-bed is in good shape, a couple of extra holes to fill, one dent worth fixing, and a little welding and sand blasting will make it ready for some paint.
 
mtflat, anyway to ID the gear ratio? tag or numbers stamped like the cars were. I have looked but , I am going to pressure wash the whole truck next week, and get a better look.
 
Not that I know of - the shop manual just lists the pinion/ring gear tooth counts.

5.83 is 6/35

5.14 is 7/36

Short of opening the diff, you could jack up the axle and count driveshaft and wheel revolutions (dividing appropriately of course). A search here would probably turn up directions........
