01Y-4209-B with a copper ring gear?

I found this in a batch of parts from Little Dearborn.

4.85 ratio, part number says it's a 40-52 122" wb 3/4 and 1 ton truck

That's not the issue, though. It has a steel pinion but what looks to be a copper ring gear. Maybe I'm just dumb but it seems to me that copper would be inferior to bronze which is again inferior to steel.

Seems odd to mix the metals that way. I'm not a metalurgist by any stretch but I would think the steel would wear away the copper.

Didn't think to check that. The magnet sticks, but it's definitely a cupreous metal (has green corrosion in places), which I guess means it's plated. Anyone heard of that?

Some of the model B 4cyl cams were copper plated, I think it was for part of the heat treat process, there is steel under the thin layer of copper

Interesting. Learn something new every day.

I'll have to inform Mrs69 that I'm not the know-it-all she likes to say I am :D

The copper coating was done even in the Model T era. I have seen nuts, bolts, camshafts and pinions that were copper coated.

Ford marked the ring and pinion in matching pairs. See that both have the same numbers engraved.

It is generally done as a stop off in certain heat treating operations but it has the added usefulness of being a corrosion preventative.
