It has been told to me by Alot of people to "don't get that flathead hot, they can't take it" Nobody's ever said what hot is. I haven't had a problem, but don't want to have one either. Just was looking for a safe number from a group that have had experience with drivability of flathead engines.

I run a electric fuel pump so no vapor locks, I also have a 7lb cap and a just in case 12" electric pusher fan, but never used it. What temp is too hot?

Would 220 be too hot, I run a 7lb cap, electric fuel pump and I have a 12" pusher elec. Fan just in case, but I never turn it on.

What is too hot for a flathead to run on a 90 degree day on the highway at about 2500 rpm? My 40 coupe with 53 merc motor runs about 205 after about 20 minutes. I have never let it go hotter than that, I just slow down and it will stay around 190. I run a 5 blade flex fan and 180 thermostats.

Yeah, after measuring the torque tube at 74 inches, its not going to work. I will just have to find someone to put a ring and pinion in it. Well does anyone need a 40 merc complete rear with 3:54 gears?

I sure would like to be able to swap the whole housing. It sounds expensive for me to have the ring and pinion replaced. I have called the local shops, they say that they can do it, but when asked if they know what a banjo rearend is they don't know what I am talking about. I just hang up.. arrrg!

I have a 53 merc motor, wish I still had the 60 though. Dad got rid of it before I was born, lol.

The Ford has a sleeve, the Merc doesn't,it has a nut and a jam nut. It looks like the shafts are different lengths.

I currently have a 4:44 ratio in my standard coupe. I have recently aquired a complete rearend assembly from a 40 Merc with a 3:54 ratio. Was looking to putting in my Ford. Both are coupes. Could this be done? What are the differences? Any help would be appreciated.

I have a warmed up 53 engine. approx 120 hp. If it is a 4:44,,, wow! It does launch out there pretty quick. But at 60 mph it is wound up pretty good. I think a swap would be easier. I can replace seals and related things,I did it on the existing rear end. I think maybe a higher gear than 3:78 I...

This car originally had a 60hp in it. I think it has a 4:33 gear in rearend

Has anyone changed the rearend ring and pinon gears to a diff ratio to lower the RPM at say 60mph. Is this an easy job? or is there an easy swap of the whole rear end to some other, still keeping the banjo style.

Would it be detrimental to run about 4 degrees on timing and maybe 600 on idle speed?

I am tuning my 53 flatty up and replaced plugs (gapped @ 30),wires,cap,rotor,points and condenser. set dwell at 28, timing @ 2 deg. Now I set the idle speed @ 450. I got all specs from Van Pelts. This thing is barely running. seems a little slow. Got great vacuum. It has a little hesitation off...

I have found that the 53 flatty came out of a customline and the oilpan runs very close to the steering rods. I think a pan from a truck or a merc that has a rear sump would work better. Does anyone have a source fora pan?
