Why not take it to the experienced generator shop and have the coils tested. If OK use them. If not,then replace them and install new brushes and bearings.

Are you sure the adjusting needle seat is in place in the adjustment housing and in good condition ?

Is the paint flat , semi-gloss or Gloss ? Any Photos ?

If you can find a rolling or better yet a running chassis that is in good condition you would save a LOT of time and money compared to putting one together piece by piece.
