Greetings guys, Problem sorted. It turned out that the problem was in the small gear at the drive shaft end of the cable. Some one had done a QUICK repair !!!! to the Key type mark on the shaft so replaced this and all go. Very many thanks to you all that provided info

Hi there Bob, I had similar probs with the same set up on our 30 phaeton and found the wires in the fuse link at the starter ie the main supply to all the electrics had a poor connection so cleaned up the fuse and soldered the wire joints and all is well. Hope this is of some help. Happy motoring

Yes leave the steering. Be sure to position the UJ gaskets before you set the engine/ gearbox in their final position My engine crane had a levelling bar which made the job very easy and I was able to keep things in control. Best of luck. Happy motoring

Thanks Tom, I have had an issue with oil loss from the trans so all suggestions have been of great assistance. I discovered the rear flinger was missing and now the washer so correcting these should help the situation.
