    Flathead Disassembly Help

I second Henry's suggestion for reading material. I purchased JWLs book last week. It's just loaded with dyno pulls comparing the common mods and speed parts. You're likely to make better use of your budget if you read it BEFORE you start buying parts like cams and induction.

    More on HIGH SHIPPING FEES

I hear you, but one is run by the gov, meaning you probably couldn't throw enough money at it to make it efficient/profitable. I work for the gov too, it's hard to watch sometimes.

    Cam Regrinding questions

Thanks Pete. I will try to find a Merc cam. Think I may have a local lead. You are a cam regrinder aren't you? If so, I will PM you. I imagine conducting biz on the forum is frowned upon.

    Cam Regrinding questions

Search feature not working well at all this morning, need to ask a few questions before I spend money. I am building an 8BA with a 4" Merc crank, Eddy heads and a Super Dual intake for mostly street use. I mostly understand how a regrind works, and realize most all flatty cams are regound...

    402 CU IN Flathead

Sounds like a crunchy burnt oil mess to clean out now and then. Interesting idea though. There is some serious time invested in the design.

Bad flatty day, is this crack fatal?

I completely agree. A professional machinist will look at it. I'm not going to just start drilling holes in the deck.

Bad flatty day, is this crack fatal?

The old M110s were going out early in my career. I work on the new M777s now which is a 155MM Howitzer (replaced the M198). It's pretty crazy how far they will shoot even with conventional propellant. I don't know how the tube stays together with some of the experimental stuff. The accuracy...

Bad flatty day, is this crack fatal?

Doesn't appear to have any depth at this point. It runs to the water port edge, and not around the corner. Looks like a scratch. Appears to have no depth to it. (Yet). I'll have it stitched. Ol Ron, I think you typoed on that rifles range capability? If not, I want one too because 20,000...

    Barrs Leak Question

Best used in a clean cooling system. In my experience, it usually seals the problem, but turns your coolant into mud your antifreeze isn't fresh.

Bad flatty day, is this crack fatal?

The M2 is the only old school weapon left in my armory. We still have them and they perform well with minimal care. It can't talk to the satellites and locate itself on the battlefield, but it is sure a lot less trouble for us maintainers.

Bad flatty day, is this crack fatal?

No cooch, I supervise a military maintenance facility lol. My primary customer is a Howitzer Battalion. I have restored a few antiques, but they are DEMILed and they just aren't as fun after you do that.

Bad flatty day, is this crack fatal?

Appreciate the info guys. Fort Dodge is about a 7 HR round trip for me. Certainly better than throwing a block away though. I have one local shot that I know of. A very old and well equipped shop in Davenport, Iowa. They have done machining on my street/strip cars and also the Howitzers I...

Bad flatty day, is this crack fatal?

I am in Iowa. I'll have to talk to the local machine shops. I have no idea if anyone around here pins blocks. Flatties are not at all common around here.

Bad flatty day, is this crack fatal?

Doesn't appear to go into the port at all yet. Appears to be a light surface crack. I know that can be deceiving though. Guess it's time to find out what my local machine shops are capable of.

Bad flatty day, is this crack fatal?

Really thought I had a good block. Hard to get a good PIC due to glare from camera flash. Their is a vertical crack in the middle of the blue tape. A surface crack at this point, but a crack nonetheless, from the valve seat to the waterjacket. This block is junk?

    Oversized valves in factory guides.

Thanks Ron, when I get heads I will analyze the transfer area for possible improvements. 40 Deluxe- Regarding CR loss, It appears I can easily pick the CR I want as heads are available in a variety of combustion chamber volumes. You can relieve a block and still easily achieve CR from...

    Oversized valves in factory guides.

My confusion lies in that the block surface appears to in effect be an extension of the short side radius coming out of the port. The SS radius is usually the obstruction in a port if it isn't designed really well. If it is proven that relieving is of no benefit I can accept it, but I still...
