    Pitman arm for 1946 Mercury

I installed the new pitman arm and that solved the shimmy. I took the advice on the lock washer and got a one inch that would allow it to go over the spline if needed. The arm went in easily and my steering is tight. Thanks to all that offered suggestions or parts.

    Pitman arm for 1946 Mercury

Hard to photo the play between the sector and pitman arm, but I did measure the ID of the lock washer and it is .9 of an inch, and won't fit over the spline on the sector...might be to small to snug up the pitman arm...if so, new washer and problem might be solved.

    Pitman arm for 1946 Mercury

Thanks for the input, it is possible there is more damage than the arm itself. I'm starting with the pitman arm to see if that fixes it, if not I'll pull the box. I can visually see a lot of play between the arm and the box.

Not sure what i was doing to the bumper, but you might be right. I do remember sitting on the fender and petting the hood ornament; and being very upset when the Mercury was sold to get an Olds with an automatic transmission. I think my uncle owned it for a year. I bought my next 46 Merc, a...

this is really helpful about the by-pass check valve, I looked up in my 1946 Motor's manual and they suggest it limits out at 30#; so when i am getting readings of 60# with cold oil, and near 0 with warm oil, something might be stuck and not opening correctly. i'll pull the manifold and check it...
