Modern Valve kit and a Stromberg 97 on an slightly upgraded A engine?

Y-Blockhead A little grease will stick the modern keepers in place while you let off on the spring compressor. Stuffing a rag in the hole at the bottom of the valve chamber will keep loose parts from falling into the pan.

Modern Valve kit and a Stromberg 97 on an slightly upgraded A engine?

Welcome to the Barn. The higher compression head and improved cam will improve torque throughout the rpm range. The higher flow carburetor will improve power at the higher rpm. Use either a new or rebuilt 97 carb but you will have to experiment with different jets to get it operating at it's...

    Fire

In the mid 1960's while driving home from college in my 1930 coupe, I stopped at a gas station along highway 101 in California. It was closed because of a fire. This was an old wooden gas station which no longer exist. The owner explained that a Model A had pulled up for gas and caught fire...

Big Hammer, No regulator. The fuel pump appears to have the correct pressure for the Weber. I have never measured the pressure.

    Fuel Pump Location

My fuel pump for my Weber is located in the line from the tank shut off to the fuel sediment bulb. (1930 car). I do not know the brand as it came in a box with the car. Some will object to it being inside the car but it has never been a problem. It keeps the line from the sediment bulb to the...

    Hard steering

Analyze one thing at a time. King pins, tie rod, drag link, steering box, low tire pressure. If the EZ steering parts are too tight then it is possible it was put together wrong.

Model A specific tasks for evaluating car & seller before buying?

Test the brakes at 20 mph on asphalt. Pick a road with no traffic and nothing to hit on the side of the road. Good brakes should stop straight ahead in about 24 feet at 20 mph. Push the pedal hard to test the brakes. Do not drive the car if it does not check out with your Model A mechanic...

    6volt battery charging

I have a LiPo battery in my car. On a tour a week ago the temperature was near freezing. The battery barely turned over the engine. LiPo batteries do not like cold weather. I think the current going through the battery may have warmed it up enough to start the engine. The rest of the day...

    Cold start help

Also, summer gasoline is different than winter gasoline. Winter gasoline has more volatile components that evaporate easier in cold temperatures for easier starting. Added: This pertains to all gasoline whether it contains ethanol or not. Gasoline is a blend of different components, some...

    Shock question

From an engineering standpoint, hydraulic shocks are better than friction shocks. Friction shocks have a constant resistance force whereas hydraulic shocks have a resistance that is proportional to the speed that the suspension is traveling. So it you hit a bump hard the friction shocks could...

Jim, You are right about the unbalance in the gear but I think he may be pointing to something else. The photo is not clear enough to see the actual notch. A better photo would help.

Still Worried About the Antique Car Hobby Being Dead or Dying??

Danial Boone use to hunt bears where I live. Point is that things change. Each generation only knows about their generation. Unless you are a history buff and re-enact Civil War battles. Or 20 years old and own a Model A.

Sorry, I thought you were talking about the big flat area. I have no idea what the small notch is for.

    Starter Bendix

I don't know what the small spring is for but the notch is because that is a weight. The weight keeps the gear from moving forward when the motor is running. Gravity keeps it from moving. The weight stays with the heavy part down and the gear does not move.

Radius Rod...use the rubber ball or not

Two things: Changing the caster changes the toe-in. Check the toe-in after you finish up repairing the ball. You can buy rubber grease that is formulated for use on rubber. Some of the normal grease can cause damage to the rubber. You know this based on your use of KY jelly,.

    Rear Spring Safety, Tube Shocks

The tube shocks work great on my Fordor. The ones that come in the kits from the vendors like Snyder's have about the right amount of dampening. That said, the original shocks were very good and adjustable, but now are very expensive. Probably the safest way to remove the rear spring is with...
