    Shock question

Reading about early racing cars that had friction shocks (think Bugatti Type 35), they had two potential drawbacks. First, the resistance to compression and rebound were not separately adjustable. Second, their resistance, being based on friction, changes with temperature. As the friction plates...

    Shock question

My Fordor came to me with modern tube shocks and 16” V8 wheels with bias ply tires, and the rear spring is wrapped with a leather gaiter. The ride is pretty stiff (but compared with what?). I’ve read on this forum that the appropriate tube shocks must be not be too restrictive, which makes the...

How did you remount your front seat for more legroom (SW Fordor)?

Thank you! I’ll give this a try. It seems odd that the seat will be anchored by two screws instead of four, doesn’t it?

How did you remount your front seat for more legroom (SW Fordor)?

The front seat on my ‘31 Slant Windshield Fordor is slid as far back as it will go on its track. I need more legroom. QUESTION: Is there a part that extends the track or relocates it rearward? Or if the track should be removed and reinstalled farther back, how is this done? The top side of the...

Physics lesson for the week, suspension

“ One other factor is at play. The displacement is proportional to the 1/M where M is the mass of the car at the wheel. So, given all other things equal, a lighter car will have more displacement (bounce). Or if the car is light on the front end there will be more bounce there.” Q: What...

How hot is it there? I guess the spring is just beginning. Are you using side curtains on the open car?

Hood Type - 3 Swing Out Side Vents

I think there was a comment by someone who had measured the airflow through the Model A louvers with the car driving that said something like the first several louvers actually drew outside air into the engine compartment and the last louvers had air flowing out. Sorry I can’t locate the thread.

    Bugatti

The Bugatti engines had a roller-bearing crankshaft, and the big end of the connecting rods were one piece, meaning each section of the crank had to be assembled in place. This allowed high rev limits, and took advantage of the relatively low cost of labor compared to the cost of materials. The...

Driver’s Door Mechanism and Window - Slant

Re: Driver’s Door Mechanism and Window - Slant The replacement latch mechanism from Steve Becker at Bert’s Model A Store is finally installed, the window is working, and the interior door panel back in place. Although the driver’s door glass has a small crack in it I chose not to replace it...

Cough and spit? The carb must be it! Adjusted the GAV and idle screw Still backfires I feel blue Maybe a carb jet has some dirt? Squirt of carb spray couldn’t hurt. Cursing and hissing What am I missing? Ford Barn lore says it ain’t bull 9 out of 10 “carb” problems are electrical. Check for...

won't run right, driving me nuts

The Wretched Roadster came to me with the condenser mounted on the firewall. I was told the original placement in the distributor subjected it to higher temperatures. May be a case of true but irrelevant.

Why did Ford move the Model A E-brake lever from the left to the middle?

I recall a discussion (car magazine maybe?) saying that if you hit the electric emergency brake above a certain threshold speed and hold it, the rear brakes will be applied, modulated by the ABS system. I haven’t tried it.

Driver’s Door Mechanism and Window - Slant

Driver’s Door Mechanism and Window - Slant Slant windshield Fordor, driver’s door. Is there a method that makes this easier? I’m replacing the door mechanism and it’s a bear to locate in place inside the door (sandwiched between the outer and inner door metal, and with the window glass). The...
