    Swap meet observation

Went to the Little Falls, MN car show and swap meet yesterday. Long time show, has been as many as 400 cars there in the past. This year I estimated 250. Always had pretty good swap meet for small town, probably 50 spaces. That, too had many vacant spaces this year. What I noticed and...

what brand pistons for shave heads

Thanks for the info. We amateurs very much appreciate the knowledge that is shared by you who could build a flathead in your sleep!! If my EAB heads have elliptical domes, hopefully they will match, or nearly so, the Egge pistons I ordered. "Can't learn no younger" as my late Dad would...

what brand pistons for shave heads

Thanks Denny. I will get it bored and assembled and then start on the heads. Speedway has .060 over Egge pistons for $220, so I think that's the route I will go.

what brand pistons for shave heads

Thanks Kiwi. I did rough measurement above valves with tin foil and have about .125, so I think I will be ok there. The old pistons are long gone, so can't do any measuring until it's bored and have the new pistons. I paid $10 for the heads at a swap meet several years ago, so not out...

what brand pistons for shave heads

Have an 8ba at the machine shop ready to be bored. Machinist is waiting on me getting pistons. Have 4" merc crank and EAB heads. The heads appear to have been milled quite a bit--no ridge at the thermostat housing. I have read where some have had problems with the dome on Egge pistons not...

    Tom's 8NV8

Last summer a friend bought an 8n that had a 302 with a Sherman step up transmission. Well done conversion, not all hacked up. Would spin both tires on tar taking off in 4th gear. Steering was nice and tight so it drove straight, but way too fast. He sold it before "I get into trouble!!"

8BA distributor on 1936 engine possible?

Aren't the cams in a '36 221 and 8ba different?? I.e the 8ba has a gear on the front of the can that drives the dizzy and the 221 drives the dizzy with a slot? I have two 36's and have driven them for years and miles, never had to touch the points.

    1936 Door locks

As well as twisting the shaft a little to cure the droop, if the shaft is worn severely you can use a wire feed welder and weld up the worn spot and then grind/file it square again. My fix on more than one.

Can I salvage these axle threads on 47 sedan

Rusty threads can take a lot of effort to get clean. I just spent a couple afternoons getting the lug nuts off my old Ford F250 diesel pickup....16 of them, 9/16 x 18. I had put anti seize on them last time I had them off, but that was several years ago, and with Minnesota road salt, the anti...

    best sounding mufflers

For what its' worth, we have a '55 Tbird. It had some very old generic glasspacks when we bought. Restored it and put new Porter's on--sounds the same. Stock original 292.

    best sounding mufflers

Add to what I just posted. Both short mufflers, dual exhaust, Reds headers, 1 3/4 pipe, mufflers right behind the headers where they fit in the X of the frame.

    best sounding mufflers

I have Porters on one, Smithys on one, both sound good, Porters a little quieter, but different cams, so a little bit of apples and oranges. Porters on engine with dual carbs on Eddie Meyer high rise intake and Eddie Meyer heads, Smithys on stock engine with a little bigger cam. Both bored...

Don't you just love the USPS

I am a retired rural carrier, 33 years in central Minnesota. Retired almost 6 years ago. Only twice is all those years did I fail to deliver all the mail, once in the early 90's had a terrible blizzard on a saturday, got about 100 boxes delivered, been stuck 6 times. Took the mail home in my...

Eastwood High Temp exhaust manifold Coating

I have used Rustoleum High Heat Primer and paint with good results. Have '55 Tbird I did the exhaust manifolds ten years ago and they look as good now as when I did them. Sandblasted first and follow the directions on the can for curing. And we drive it a lot.

Three 1940 Fords and a large parts hoard

The one advantage of an auction is that EVERYTHING is gone when it is over, unlike garage sale/epay/want ad type selling, unless you can find an individual that will buy everything. Settled my parents and uncle's estates with auctions--as posted above, some things go for less and some for way...

Looking for a quality 6 Volt Starter

Make sure you have large enough battery cables. I had the same problem with my '36, with a good Ford starter. Moved my battery closer to the engine and made bigger cables, problem solved.

    VE Day May 8th 1945

Just returned from a trip to Germany that included visiting Dachau concentration camp--very very sobering and chilling. My dad was a B-17 pilot, flew 24 missions from England, including 4 Chowhound missions after VE day, dropping food to the starving civilians. The book "A Higher Call" is a...
