Do early/late distributors have different lengths?

I had to install a new cam and cam gear in my 1937 21 stud, the later gear type that screws on instead of the earlier type that pressed on. Now the slot in the cam doesn’t reach the distributor. Do I need to buy a later distributor?

221 rear main needed, and a question about width

The rear main bearing on my motor is OK diameter, but there is a lot of end float on the crankshaft: about 0.025" The bearing is 2.246" wide overall. Does that sound correct, or is the bearing worn on the thrust face by about 0.020"? I don't have another bearing to compare it to. I've called a...

21 stud motor rebuild, beginner questions

My 1937 motor is leaking badly at the rear main. I think it’s time for new piston rings. Cylinder #1 was low compression, leaking down past the rings and blowing oil out the breather and also into the bellhousing. And I might as well measure everything while I have the motor apart to see if...

where to drill 21 stud intake for PCV?

I saved a photo from an old forum thread that I can no longer find. It shows a tiny 1/4" hole drilled into the intake manifold on the passenger side beside the generator. But the PCV that everybody recommended has a rubber grommet that needs a very large 1" diameter hole (Standard V261 PCV...

what is under the head studs?

I had to drill out a broken cylinder head stud, and some of the drilling swarf went down into the motor through the hole that used to be the stud. Does anybody know what is under this stud in a 21 stud motor? Is it accessible if I pull off the intake manifold? Or did the chips fall between the...

    head gasket questions

Hi guys. I've recently installed new head gaskets, Best brand. I installed them dry, and water was leaking from the exhaust pipe immediately upon starting the motor. I then removed the gaskets, and greased them with wheel bearing grease on both sides and reinstalled. (The grease was recommended...

source for woody wagon door seals?

Does anybody sell door seals for 37 wagons? I figured Drake's would be the one, but they seem to only do closed cars and convertibles. Is there one from a closed car that might fit, or has anybody tried the universal types? thanks, Pete

recommendations for a little more hp & torque?

My 37 could use a little more torque and hp when hauling the family around. It is a stock 21 stud, with rebuilt carb, distributor, and fuel pump. I don't want a hot rod or loud pipes, and don't want to pull the motor from the car. It idles well, is quiet and runs smooth. I'd like to keep all...

I bought some new hub bolts to replace the original ones that had buggered threads. But the new ones fall right through the holes in the brake drums. The original bolts were .625" in diameter, the holes are .625" but the new bolts are .621" Does anybody have a source for hub bolts that are...

1939 brake/clutch pedal return springs locations?

Hey guys. I'm slowly upgrading my 37 Woodie to juice brakes. The Drakes 1939 pedals are now in place, and I bought a pair of pedal return springs. But I can't see where they might attach. Does anybody have a photo that shows the details? Thanks in advance. Pete

trailer hitch ideas for a 37?

I need to create a trailer hitch for the 37 woodie. Has anybody bought a generic hitch or a kit of tubes/plates/etc that was somewhat easily adapted to a late 30's Ford? Or, can anybody please post photos of hitches that they have made? thanks, Pete

37 Spare tire cover --oversized tire?

My new woodie came with a nice spare tire cover and a band. The tires are 6.5x16" bias ply. I've tried to get that little keyed latch to grab the spare tire bracket, but cannot get it to hook on. Is there a trick? Or will it just not fit with this tire size? Even without the band, the cover...

front disc brakes on a 1937 -width?

Hi guys. I just bought an old woodie and it needs brakes. There seems to be several companies offering disc brake kits that fit the spindles. But some of the brakes increase the width of the track. Does anybody know which kits increase width the least? I want to keep the nice original wide 5...

    cable brake question, 1937

The rear brake has two long bolts that mount the shock absorber. The bottom one has come off the car and appears to be hollow and possibly threaded internally. Does that mean there is a bolt inside the brake drum that has come loose? thanks, Pete
