tire blow out on trip to walla walla

one of my new Coker Classic 6:50 16s blew out the side wall in Susanville today, on the grade to Alturas, along a 1000 foot drop off with no shoulder. Not funny. The tire has less than 3000 miles on it. 3/4 of the sidewall separated from the rest of the tire. I suspected that tire was bad, as it...

Moderl A broke down in Woodstock New Brunswick

My friends Will and Carla broke an axle on their 31 SW sedan heading back to Calif from the lobsters and lighthouses tour. They are presently trying to get the car towed to Bangor. Are there any Barners around who can give him a hand?

    replacing rear main seal

Hi. This is my first post on the V8 forum. I am typically on the Model A forum, but I am helping a guy out with his leaky V8. The rear main seal on this V8 was installed poorly, with a chunk of the rope missing. Hence, oil all over the place. The aluminum casting that holds the upper seal in...

    failed transmission needle bearings

In the last year, I have torn down a few transmissions with disintegrated needle bearing cages. Last week, I tore into my own, which also had failed needles. They have 40,000 miles on them, oil was changed regularly, they were never run dry. In each case, the needles either wore into the cage...

    Heads Up...Restorer carburetor article error

The recent Restorer, vol58, issue 4, has an article on honing the Zenith seat. There is an error in step 3, chase threads. It says the thread tap to use is a 1/4-18 pipe tap. It is not. The correct tap is a 1/2-20.

    touring through the Southwest

We just returned from a 2000 plus mile tour from central California, South through the Tehachapis into Nevada, Arizona, Utah and back over the Sierras. Most of the Model A's performed flawlessly in high heat and up to altitudes over 11,000 feet, with only minor glitches like flats, condenser...

    CCPU door latch rod spring

on a 30/31 pickup door, how does one get the tiny circular spring on the door latch rod ? I cannot get the spring over either end of the rod because of the tab that crosses the diameter on one side. I figure there must be some trick to doing it easily without bending the spring every which way...

    poor bay-B

the aforementioned B /Miller engine. It had been assembled by an unknown builder with the rocker arms oil line blocked. It was a fresh rebuild with a very worn out original Miller head bolted on top. The new owners kid took it out with only a few miles on it and ran it hard at 65 mph ( no...

    original Miller head

DSCN0192 by tiopato2000, on Flickr I'm assembling a B engine with an original Miller head. I'll post some pics later of the poor thing before we got it to rebuild. Someone in the past plugged the 2 vents in the aluminum valve cover. I assume this was because it probably blew oil all over the...

    fan belt rubbing hose.

I've been working on an early 29 station wagon lately with a powerhouse gen on it. The radiator is a repop, and the lower hose fitting is too close to the fan belt, which rubs and cuts into the hose right behind the clamp.. Other than replacing the radiator, I was thinking a smaller fan belt...

having problems with 28 cross member motor mount

I had to remove the timing cover to access the timing gears on a late 28 with the accursed front cross member motor mount. Now I cannot get the engine back far enough to clear the mount and drop into place. The rear mounts are also unbolted. I've tried crowbars, jacking the rear axle up to pull...

    baffling loss of oil UPDATE

After realizing I was looking at data provided second and third hand, I decided to go over the engine personally. What I had asked was, " did you see any clogs in the oil filler tube or cap?" I was told no. That's because the 2 who tore down the engine and inspected it did not investigate in...

    baffling loss of oil

on a recent tour, one member cooked the engine, which seized until it cooled down. Tear down revealed 4 stuck pistons, blue pins and other signs of having been run without oil , including only one cup of oil drained from the pan. The engine is one year old, well broken in with about 5000 miles...
