    charging problem

Car was running fine with normal ammeter readings - new battery. Now after starting the ammeter is normal for about five seconds then drops to -20. No other parts were changed. There is power from the J box to the generator cut out. Car sat without driving for about 1 week. What could be wrong?

    Generator cut out

I don't know if my cut out is diode or not. It is a New Rex. I have amp charge change by moving the 3rd brush and a couple amps with the lights on. I am on the bottom of the scale with electrical knowledge. How can I test with a trouble light - battery goes dead after a couple days - 5 years old.

    toe in tool

Someone was selling a toe in tool with two equal length chains that had a rod from tire to tire, roll the car for and aft until the chains touched the floor in the front and rear of the tire, the rod had a gauge that read the tow in (or out) in degrees. Any one know about it and where to get?

    Mallory ignition (long)

Several people have asked about Mallory distributors. I don't know about different models mentioned like, as I recall YA, YL etc. The distributor with the metal tag #2301105 fits the model A Ford. Most all parts are available on Amazon from Summit Racing. The cap is MSD 271 and rotor MSD...

    camshaft (Long)

I have never had an A engine totally apart. My question is - can a model A "jump" timing if the camshaft thrust plunger is not doing it's job because of a weak spring or some other reason? Reason I ask is because after complete trouble shooting the timing and entire ignition system the engine...

    "chrome plating"

I read somewhere that small parts like handles can be dipped in either Al. beer cans or "tin foil" melted to 500 degrees and get he same effect as chrome plating. Any one else heard of this or tried it? John

    fixed till broke

On going problem starting with a miss. I changed the distributor, carb, coil, spark plugs and coil to cap wire with known good parts form a running engine and timed with the New Rex. Now the car will not start. How do I check the key to distributor connection at the distributor? I am down to...

    Ignition problem

In my original post (fuel or ignition problem?) posted 8/11 I miss spoke saying the problem was fixed. The carb was taken apart 2 times and could find no problems, I have checked the timing several times with a New Rex tool. I still have missing. The car starts easy and from there on things go...

    Fuel or ignition problem

Car runs "jerky", occasional back fire, top end 45 MPH. Changed dist. body, timed with New Rex, fuel flow through carb. steady stream, points .020, GAV doesn't make much difference. Car had been running good top @ 60 mph, no intake leaks (carb cleaner used). Problem started rather rapidly...

    Intake & exhaust manifold torque

I had problems with intake manifold leaks - two tries replacing the gasket in order to stop intake leak. The thought came to me that maybe there is a preferred torque sequence. I torqued progressively 25, 30, 35, 40 and final 45 lbs. on 4,2,3,1 studs. Any comments appreciated. John

    wiring

While trouble shooting the ignition I am good to the ignition switch, can not get power to the distributor from the switch. I replaced the ignition switch and left it hanging by the wires and not touching the dash. Does the switch need to be mounted to the dash for a ground to get power to...

    engine won't run

I have a Weber 2 barrel downdraft. The engine ran good and will not start now. It will fire for a couple seconds with starter fluid and that's it. I have checked every thing with the ignition system and feel confident that is all well. Fuel pumps into the manifold when pumping gas pedal but...

    Distributor question

2 model A Fords, one with an original distributor and the other with a Mallory centrifugal advance. The original distributor spark advance/retard is controlled by moving the points and the Mallory advance/retard is controlled moving the distributor cam with centrifugal weights. What allows the...

    Center main bearing

Pulled the pan for a look around and found the center main Plastigaged out to .0025 with no shims left. What would you do? Polish the cap and try again, flat plan the cap on glass, machine shop down a tad or put it together and let it go if the others are better or no worse? John
