I need to install a new wheel cylinder in the driverside rear brake on my '53, but I can't figure out how to remove (pull?) the drum. The shop manual doesn't provide enough information, and searches on the web haven't been successful. Please advise. Thanks. Richard

    Shift "Throws" in my '53

I am working on a '53 Victoria, getting it into condition for comfortable driving/cruising. The transmission shifts o.k. but the distance (throws, I believe is the term ) between 1st and 2nd and between 2nd and 3rd seem too long. Is this adjustable ? I would like a tighter feel. thanks. Richard

    53 Ford Clutch Linkage Woes

Several months ago I bought a 53 Victoria. The clutch worked fine but the engine needed rebuilding. I pulled the engine, following instructions in the shop manual which described disconnecting the clutch equalizer arm and its bracket from the bell housing attachment. That allowed the arm and...

    L100 cam with original lifters?

The rebuild of my 8ba will likely include the L100 cam. I am hoping to use the original lifters. However, I expect that the L100 regrind will have reduced the dimension of the base circle. I figure this will increase the clearance between the lifters and the original valves.(?) So, if my...

Installing Ignition Switch in '53 Ford

While the engine is being rebuilt, I undertook to upgrade some of the wiring relating to the ignition switch. Removing the switch from its dash position went fine. I've replaced the worn wires. Now's the hard part. I have not been able to reinstall the switch. The parts consist of: the...

    wiring in 1953 ford car

I recently bought a '53 ford car. While the engine is out for a rebuild, I have been checking some of the wiring-it is original, cloth-covered. Some of it need replacement. I have the wire diagram for the '53 and have been tracing the circuits for the "y" wire which has to do with the ignition...

    pulling 8ba in '53 Ford-done

Last week I posted regarding questions about pulling the engine in the '53. Several suggestions were posted. I decided to disconnect the block from the clutch housing, rather than disconnecting the housing from the transmission. The advice about using the two openings in the trans shield to...

removing 8ba in '53 Ford car

I could use some advise about getting the 8ba out. I have tried searching for answers but so far haven't been successful. Here's what I am wondering: 1) Do I need to remove the toe pans and center panel to access the bolts connecting the bell housing to the transmission? (Previous owner has...

'32 coupe drag race champion barn find

For those of us Barners who enjoy stories about hot rod flatheads that ran "back in the day," here's one about a great barn find: a '32 deuce coupe that competed in the first world drag race in 1954.... and was then retired, with 8/10 of a mile on the odometer. Check it out...

    Measurement of Venturi Vacuum

From time-to-time there are posts regarding the design of the load-o-matic distributor on '49-53 Ford/Mercs which are totally dependent on venturi vacuum for advance. When the distributor is used in combination with a dual carb set-up, the prevailing view is that venturi vacuum is reduced...

    clutch adjustment dilemma

Here's my problem: I have just installed an 8CM with the 50 Merc pressure plate in my '40 coupe. The final step involves adjusting for the proper travel of the clutch pedal. I found that there was not enough length on the adjusting rod. That is, the rod clevis came to the end of the...

Solution to slow cranking, poor starting

In recent months the cranking rate in my 59L was getting slower and slower. At times, after shut-off, the starter motor couldn't generate more than engaging the Bendix drive. This happened despite a new battery, cleaning the ground strap connections, running a ground directly to the starter...
