Which piston goes where? Any way to tell?

I received a Model B engine which was torn down because it was not running right after being rebuilt. The engine has maybe 15 minutes of run time. Here is the problem. The pistons and rods were removed but not marked as to which cylinder they cam from. Is there any way to determine which piston...

Still trying to get front seat out

Here are some photos of the front bottom seat cushion in my '30-'31 coupe. As you can see it is missing the adjusting knob. It looks like it may have somehow been bolted through the sides. I can't figure out how it was installed. I'm going to try removing the nuts on the underside of the side...

Running board mount does not line up

I was looking at my Dad's model a ('30-'31 coupe) and noticed that the running board does not line up with the frame bracket. It looks like my Dad made a hole where the body had one but the frame bracket was not. Can anyone explain why it did not line up? Wrong bracket or running board? Thanks...

For the life of me I can't get the seat out!

I have a '31 coupe that I want to remove the front seat. There is no adjuster at the center underside of the seat. It looks like it has tracks, but no amount of budging can move the seat. I have looked and can't see where the seat might be bolted to the floor. I've tried tying a come-along to...

    Expected Piston wear?

This piston probably has about 4 hours of use. Are the marks that look like scratches on the piston a normal wear pattern? The engine had been overheating to the point the starter could not turn it over. Thanks, Todd

JB Weld on crank end housing?

I pulled the flywheel on my model A engine and found this - It looks like the rebuilder used JB Weld to form half of the end of the crank end bearing housing. Is this done very often and an accepted repair? Todd

    Timing gear nut

Is it common practice to use a screwdriver and hammer to secure the timing gear nut? Or is there a proper tool to use? Seems the rebuilder got a little lazy maybe?

    Oil pump drive

The teardown of the newly rebuilt engine (30 years ago) continues. Take a look at the oil pump drive. Can anyone tell me the clearance reccomended in the photo below, and if the top piece should have groves on the underside for slinging oil? Clearly things do not look good for 10 miles running...

    Babbit woes

Taking apart my Dad's B engine that was rebuilt by a very large antique engine rebuilder in the early 80's, never ran correctly, (overheating & bad oil pump install) then sat for 20 years. The engine maybe ran 10 miles. Taking off the rod caps, this is what I saw. I take it that these are not...

Correct way to fit Engine stand adapter

I purchased an engine stand adapter - Ford part number, but am having trouble figuring out how to correctly attach it. It looks like it bolts to the water return outlet on the left side of the block, and if I do that, the bolts that are used for the water outlet are too long. The bottom part of...

    Rust found in head

Perhaps this is a lesson on why using just water in the radiator is not a good idea. The engine kept overheating. I had the radiator cleaned out with the report there was quite a bit of gunk and rubber pieces. Then I took the head off and with a few light taps, this is what came out. Is this...

Is there a trick to getting the head on?

I have a '31 Model A with a Model B engine. I am trying to take the engine out for repair. Before I decided to take the engine out, I removed the head. So now I have to place the head back on so I can use the lift that bolts to the head to lift the engine. I tried putting the head back on the...

How to remove seat in '31 coupe

Okay, I know the answer must be obvious - but I can't figure it out. I need to remove the seat in my '31 coupe - but it is not moving. It does not have an adjustment wheel. Does the seat slide out? Is it one piece, or are the seat and back separate? I have tried lifting and sliding it out, but...

What tool to use for square head main bearing cap bolts.

Can anyone point me to the correct tool to use to remove the square headed main bearing cap bolts? (Ford Model A-B engine) I am worried if I use a standard multi-point socket, it will round off the corners. thanks,
