    Change coupe to roadster?

Years ago I think I saw a "universal top kit" that could possibly be adapted to give my 1929 Coupe a fold-down soft top. Is something like that available?

    Inner tube advice needed

Do any of the suppliers sell a heavy-duty 21 inch inner tube? I patched, installed, re-patched, installed my older one....another leak! Gave up. Got my new one installed today......new leak. Patched, installed.....still leaked around my new patch after I made sure it didn't leak before I put...

Horn rod moves with steering wheel

I have everything back together on my 7-tooth steering shaft, and the light/horn rod works just fine until I attach the spider at the bottom. I have seen on other threads that there is a thin light rod bushing that is supposed to fit in the tube to space the rod away from the steering wheel...

    7-tooth Sector problem

I am installing a new 7-tooth sector shaft, but even with the thrust washer on the shaft and without the gasket, the sector thrust screw does not reach the end of the shaft until it is farther in than it leaves any threads for the jam nut! What am I missing?

Is this a standard 21" Model A wheel?

Can you tell from this photo if this is a standard wheel and not an AR? This is my spare wheel I am working on.....very badly rusted rim, but I'm smoothing it out with a airtool scaler and an angle grinder. I have a rubber protector that fits down in the rim, but I am smoothing everything out so...

    7 Tooth Help

I am rebuilding my 7-tooth steering column and wondering how the oil seal retainer with tube is installed. The old oil seal retainer shown in photo 1 had a rubber(?) washer/gasket above it. Photo 2 shows what I received as a gasket set and I am wondering about it. Where would the 0-ring go? Is...

    Carburetor inlet threads leak

I have a Zenith carburetor that has boogered threads in the inlet. I tried the yellow sealing tape, that didn't help. I used some Teflon paste, and that didn't work. Tomorrow I will try both together. Any ideas how to get this thing to seal? Silicone around the outside after it is tightened as...

    Spark Control rod lubrication

Should the spring end of the control rod that goes from the steering column to the distributor upper plate be lubricated? The end of the plate arm has a ball fitting that came loose on mine..... Is there a way to keep it from coming loose? I am trying contact cement, but the thought crossed my...

1929 Coupe metal header cover help

I have a used metal header cover that needs help. Photo one shows how it lines up along the front of the header. The second photo shows the driver's side end and it seems to fit ok. The third photo shows how it is twisted at the passenger end. The fourth photo shows how the lip is above the...

    Cooked corn in radiator

The first time I ran my newly-reassembled 1929 Coupe, it overheated quite quickly. I did a dumb thing by opening the quail radiator cap before she had cooled off and got a geyser of hot water and cooked corn! When the excitement was over, it looked like I had dumped a can of hominy on the hood...

    Really old gasoline question

While not directly a Model A question, but maybe related. I have a 1977 Ford Econoline flatbed truck that has not been driven for several years. I'm in the process of draining the gas tank to investigate what is going on. The gasoline that I am pumping out is the color of Coca-Cola and really...

    Radiator cooked corn??

Well....! I went for a drive today and stopped to talk to some friends and the radiator started boiling over. I drove up the hill to my house and figured I would take a look. I forgot that even with a non-pressurized radiator, we could have a geyser. Yup! And when the deluge was over, there...

    Tricks to remove cutout cover?

I tried the instructions in Jim Shild's Restorer's Model A Shop Manual, but holding the unit as he described, just bent the ears that attach to the generator. I removed the screws, filed as described on his page 144. I don't see how clamping the cutout in the vise as shown will work. Maybe I...

    1929 Hood Latches won't reach

Now that I have my hood looking a little better after putting shims under the cowl....my hood latches won't extend enough to grab the hood. They actually sort of hold the hood if I turn them around and use the finger pull side. Any ideas? It looks like I could shim up the mountings and use...

    Raising Cowl fix

There must be more entries on hood and door alignment that just about any other aspect of this hobby! Reading through many of them so far has helped. Just one quick question: If I need to shim the first body bolts to raise the cowl, do I need to shim the 2nd and 3rd bolts as well? My 1929 Coupe...

    Cowl lacing replacement style

I just received my cowl lacing kit from Snyders. The 1/2" can be cut to rivet to both sides of the cowl. No problem....works like radiator shell lacing. The question I have is about the 5/8" lacing for the front of the gas tank. There is no wire in the replacement style lacing, so I am puzzled...

    Headlight switch sequence

I have finally installed my light switch. New wiring harness, new switch. Two-light headlights. See photos: First photo is with light switch at 6 o'clock: lights off Second photo: light switch at 7 o'clock: only driver's side parking light on Third photo: light switch at 5 o'clock...

    Generator hot to touch

I'm guessing that a generator should not get so hot it is hot to the touch. I ran my engine for several minutes and after I shut it down, the generator felt really hot to the touch. What might be going on? This generator worked fine 10 years ago before i dismantled the car. I changed nothing. I...

    Ten years later, she's alive!

"Bessie" my 1929 Coupe fired up and moved under power for the first time in ten years. There is a lot to do yet, but hey! I will need to troubleshoot the fuel/carburetor system. Engine ran fine for a few minutes before starving for fuel and backfiring. Carburetor has been dry for 10 years, so...

How to measure front wheels to straight ahead

I want to mount my steering wheel in the X position with my "suicide knob" at 2 o'clock. What is a good way to determine when the front wheels are in the straight ahead position? I have a 1929 Coupe with the splined shaft.
