    Poppy Yellow?

I'm always looking for spray can yellow for my YOM effort in California plates. How often do we look at the common RUST OLEUM brand in "marigold" or "golden sunset" colors. They caught my eye and matched my best plates very well. What do you think? Fred A

    Rat Cleanup After Bad Storage

Got a chance to start tearing down my '40 coupe after a couple of years of storage. The rat mess was ghastly. Lucky I had removed the interior Any one have experience with pressure washing such a problem? The cabin is an empty shell. Only the doors stubbornly remain. The door hinge screws are...

'40 Coupe Seat Pocketing and Listings

Weak and rotting old burlap pocketing on the seat bottom springs and listings on the back needs to be replaced. This stuff is 85 years old and surely there is a better material to replace it. Something special about Burlap? Thanks: Fred A

    '41, An Enigma!

I grew up with old Fords, but mostly went with '40s as they were always quite common. On a whim I just bought a '41 convert project, and immediately put it into storage. What have I done? It sure is no '40. I'll be searching this site for clues. Thanks: Fred A

    Stiff Fuel Pumps?

I have been buying new in the box fuel pumps for my 59A engine at the swap meet. Mindlessly I buy more because they all are uniformly so stiff in operation (and cheap) that they could be dumped on that market as defective. I just can't work them with my hands. Dare I use one of them? Thanks: Fred A

    1941 Shocks, Early/Late?

In the Pre-War "Chassis Book" shocks seem to be listed as 40-1 and 41 for those years, with 01A then 11A respectively. Being *** deep in 01A parts, would be pleased to use those, if needed on a 11A. As soon as the ground dries out, I may crawl under 11A to ID the shocks and also read the rear...

Engine in the car for decades.

59A engine in my car with no spark plugs needs lubrication and prep before turning over. I would like some pressure to the crank to avoid dry rotation. Should I use low viscosity or just some oil normal to the engine? I expect to encounter rust in the upper cylinder due to the plugs being out so...

    1941 Floor?

Do later floorboards fit my 1941? I will be asking more 11A questions as I explore my recent project. Thanks: Fred A

    1941 Transmission Gearset Tricks?

I have a 1941 convertible. Ford advertising describes the 1941 cars to be faster than pervious models. Same engine, heavier car, nonsense. Does this magic trick may reflect some change in gear ratios that allows some narrowly supported claim. I'd bet on a 15/29 gear as standard. Good Luck: Fred A

    AC Electric Fuel Pump?

Considering the use of an AC type fuel pump in my '40. I say AC type in that there are subsequent clones like the Amgauge et al. Here in California we have an ethanol fuel blend that could get worse as part of aggressive electrification schemes. The two pumps that I have are dated '78 and '94. I...

    '40 Deluxe Starting Crank Extension

What is the overall length of the extension. Appears that they can vary. Is the crank tool a practical tool or can it damage the radiator or grille? Thanks: Fred A

    '40 Door Hinge Pins?

I have tried to remove the pins with the door on the car. I use the common hinge pin tool, Kroil, and the door itself as a lever. Both doors have been overextended so they do not close easily. I'm concerned that the tool will upset the pin and make things worse. Should I consider leaving things...

    Most Popular "78" Transmission Case?

Over the years I've heard so many opinions about which variant (recently learned cool word) is the strongest. Beyond the mythology that comes with old Fords, I'm putting together a few in each desirable gearset. This is to be a best of the best. There must be at least four types that I can think...

    Pre-'42 Two Brush Generators?

I've been going through my pile of generators for my '40. Many are the earlier style, but all have two side terminals. As with so many Ford components, are these aftermarket replacements using a later design? All have Ford part numbers as originals. Was there a trend toward the use of later...

    Two Bolt Distributor Lubrication?

I am putting together a "crab" distributor from parts. I notice that from my nine examples, none of the rear bushings are drilled from the holes at nine and twelve o'clock. Are these holes from an early version for lubrication that was found to be unneeded? Is there any reason to drill (or not)...

    '40 Grill Side Panels

With a somewhat early ID number of 5304..., I feel that the side panels should be of the first louver design. Fine examples of final design are abundant, but because of the supply chain issue, prices have really gone up. The first, early design panel is even worse. The theme of this car is "How...

    Lower Radiator Hose Clearance

Radiator hoses should be about as easy as it can get, I thought. On a '40 with the revised stabilizer, the hoses really crowd the Fan, stabilizer, and front brake line. There is less than a quarter inch clearance with the fan. The stabilizer clearance is tight too. The brake line was moved aft...

    Swage Or Not To Swage?

My front drums are new and all the parts are new. The arc of the shoes is right. Since the brakes have not been run, it's starting to worry me about the new drums not being swaged to the lugs. If I were to swage, could they loose concentricity, and need to be turned? One of those haunting...

    '40 Stabilizer "Cut Outs"?

'40 radiator, grille to cross member shield has "cut outs" to clear the stabilizer. Repop shields show these "cut outs" as pressed semi circles. They look like trouble to me. I can just see me prying them out, damaging the shield. Do I need to cut the little tabs before prying, or is it a...
