Heater blower motor control switch removal tool.

The bezel on my 50 for the blower motor control switch appears to need a special tool to unscrew it. Has two holes 180 degrees apart. The knob and shaft can be removed for access. Any suggestions?

    Lifter won't stay in adjustment.

8-CM Merc engine. 296 C.I. 3-3/8 X 4-1/16. Potvin Cam and lifters. Lifter on #2 won't hold it's valve lash. I'm thinking of two options. #1 back the lifter adjusting bolt out as much possible and distress the threads with a small chisel or punch. #2 Use Red or Blue thread sealer on on the...

    Triple Carb Intake gasket.

50 Ford flathead with Offenhouser triple carb intake manifold. Is there a special intake gasket for this? The front of the intake has two holes One for oil fill and the other, I assume, is for a road draft tube. My problem is there is no cutout in the gasket to match the hole and that makes the...

    Flathead engine lifting plate

Anyone in the Detroit area have an engine lift plate I could borrow (or rent)? I have a lift plate but am not comfortable with only 4 bolts holding it on in a very small area. I was hoping not to have to buy one for a one time use. They are not cheap. Thanks.

Strange engine bolt. Where does it go?

I'm reassembling my engine 1950 8-CM and I found this bolt that is quite different than the rest. It's a 7/16 hex head about an inch about a quarter long, coarse thread. It has a hole drilled through the center threaded end and another through the top end of the threads. I assume it's used to...

    Cam shaft gears

I have the timing marks lined up on my cam shaft and crank shaft gear. Every thing looks good there. I also noticed there are fine line marks on the cam shaft and gear that don't lineup. Is this gear pressed onto the cam shaft? The cam is a Potvin 415 in a 296 CI Merc block. Do the 4 bolts on...

    oil pan questions. 49-53 8-CM

The main question is about the front seal on the crank shaft. it's a one piece seal slide on type has a small hole on one side. I assume the hole faces toward the engine. Second question. The seal appears to be set into the block and pan with some type of silicone in both the block and pan area...

    reinstalling engine

I'm getting ready to reinstall my 8BA engine. I thought that since I had it out, it would be a good idea to replace the old motor mounts and radiator hoses. Any suggestions as to a procedure to use? I was going to install the motor mounts on the water pumps first but leave them slightly loose...

    Adjustable lifters.

Have a couple of adjustable lifters that won't hold their settings. Suggestions? They are the solid type with the two groves not hollow. Yes, my lifter bores are drilled. I've heard about staking the adjuster but not sure what's involved with that. Can it be done without removing the lifter...

    Head gasket opinion please.

Just putting my 8-BA back together and was wondering about copper head gaskets and Aluminum heads. I am concerned with electrolysis between the two different metals. Also having a hard time finding big bore gaskets. I'm 3-3/8"X 4-1/16 or 396 CI"s. Seems everyone is out of copper but will go...

Large gear on back of 8-BA block

I appears the large gear on the rear of my block needs a new bushing. This is the one that is driven by the cam shaft and in turn drives the oil pump. Anyone have a source for parts for this. So far no luck. Do I need a puller for the bushing?

Large gear in rear of 8-BA block.

This gear appears to be driven by the rear of the camshaft. When I disassembled my engine I noticed it was very loose and sloppy. I don't see anyway to remove it to check it out. What is it's purpose as it doesn't appear to drive anything but is driven by the gear on the end of the camshaft. I'm...

    help needed with flathead block.

I need to have my Mercury block tested for a crack. I can't see any with just a visual inspection. Anyone have a source in the Detroit area? Pistons, crank and valves are still in. #3 had water in it as well as #7. Oil pan had a lot of water in it. I think Magnaflux is my next option. Thanks to...

Mallory dual Point Distributor & Coil.

No matter what coil I use with my new Mallory dual point Distributor, they all seem to run good but are very hot to the touch. Is that much heat normal? I've had two coils quit on me and create a no start or run condition on me until they cool off. Instructions say no ballast resistor needed...
