    Carbon fibre cooling fan

Look what I got for my 80th birthday. A composites resin and carbon fibre radiator fan. Moulded round an original drive pulley by our friend Bruce Sratton. He needs scrap pulleys in good condition to make more and they are not plentiful in NZ. Bruce did amazing work on all sorts of Composites...

    Bendix bolt retrieval

Trevor lost a bendix bolt on our South Island rally in Te Anau. I had read on Fordbarn varoius retrieval methods. All we had was an old vacuum cleaner and my syphon hose. It caught the bolt end-on so easily I could not believe it! SAJ in NZ

    Sparks Reno Fordbarn meeting

Had a really great FordBarn meeting at Pizza Plus tonight. I Was so busy I forgot to take pictures. Thanks so much Daveymc29 for organising it. Too many members and wives to enumerate but some great histories and stories were told one by one by the men AND ladies. I would not like to single any...

Noisy metal timing gear cured by torsional damper

My roadster had a noisy fibre timing gear at idle. See earlier thread https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=157518[URL="https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=157518"]]. I replaced it with an aluminium gear with no detectable backlash (too tight but all I had at the time)...

Large air cleaners on RHD cars

After several older clumsy attempts I have air cleaners on our 2 RHD cars that I am very happy with. Steve Driver, one of our club members, insisted that he could design a collection box that would provide a full sized intake area for a B Zenith and still clear the 2 tooth steering columns in...

    Loveland MAFCA convention visit

We are 10 Kiwis travelling in a group to Loveland from Auckland New Zealand. I imagine there are many more Kiwis and Aussies going too. This is just a note to say we will be there and hope to meet up with other Barners at some stage. Has a meeting been arranged at all like at Puyallup? We land...

    Repop light switch fix

My old re-pop light switch flew apart internally. With misgivings, I purchased a new one. Sure enough the (original, I think) Bakelite contact plate was not being held closely enough in contact with the 3-bump brass connector. The symptom was that the lights would work if the switch lever was...

    Cracked babbitt

I Pulled apart my Touring engine, bought from Snyders 17000 miles ago. The engine is babbitted and was built by Schwalms 5 years ago. I thought it was developing piston slap and suspected no 3 piston, which nipped up without damage at 4000 miles. But No 3 will take a 0.002 inch feeler up the...

Diff. pinion cut down on threaded drive shaft

In fitting a Mitchell O/D to a members car, we found the pinion had no threaded portion and was retained on the drive shaft by smaller nuts on the driveshaft itself, which was threaded. See pics. attached. Is this a "Farmer Fix", part of a different model Ford or what? Anyway it slowed us down...

    Merry Christmas from New Zealand

Wishing everyone on the Barn a very merry Christmas and a succesful and gratifying new year. May your engines run quietly, your chassis not rot , your pistons slide smoothly and your big ends stay firm. SAJ in NZ at midnight on Christmas eve

    Timing gear knock

When I got my roadster I imported a touring engine from Snyders, reconditioned by Schwalms. It ran nicely until I burned No. 3 exhaust valve. I removed the head, replaced the valve and since then I have had a camshaft knock that I diagnosed as end thrust "walk" by screwing in a polythene bolt...

    Camshaft wear pattern

I pulled the motor apart on a members car for a knock and found the centre main cap had lost most of the babbit, due to poor or no tinning. But I also noticed a circular wear pattern on all the cam flanks. See pic no 1. Is this pattern normal or indicative of too small a follow foot for the...

    Rear Engine mount spacer bushes

I am replacing the rear engine mounting rubbers using Snyders' pieces, which are 0.2 inch thick for the L-shaped pads and 0.215 for the outer pads. What came out were about 1/4 inch thick for both inner and outer pads (and no rubber under the mounts against the lower frame flanges). The new...

    straighten bent crankshaft

I bought a 1931 Tudor for my wife that has not been registered since 1996. It has been started and run a few times since then and I drove it briefly to assess it before having it delivered on a trailer to my workshop. On dismantling the motor I found corrosion in the bores and on the middle...

    rust treatments,vinegar,phoshphoric,muriatic

WARNING. This turned into bit of a diatribe. I thought I would write a little bit about vinegar treatments since it is an oft-occurring topic in relation to both rust removal and radiators. Do not read on if too detailed for you. I am not a vinegar expert, but I did qualify in chemistry (MSc.)...

    Burnt Exhaust Valve

Fellow Barners. I have a 1931 roadster with 10000 miles on a rebuilt engine from Snyders (Schwalms built). It has stainless valves, alloy seats, reground “touring” cam, 5.5:1 Snyders head, B carb. Fitted about 3000 miles ago (jets adjusted to water flow: idle52. Main146. Cap 470. Comp 126...

    roadster front spring problem

I have an early RHD 1930 standard roadster, which someone tried to turn into a deluxe in the 1990’s. The front spring it came to me with allowed the draglink to rub on the tie rod and the shackles were grounding on the axle, with some wear evident on all items which touched. The shackles were...

    Valve chamber cover gasket split

I just noticed the smell of burnt oil on the exhaust every now and then. On checking, the gasket under my valve chamber cover had split at the top hole on either end. The gasket had then "walked out" by about 5/8 inch at the top on each end. The bolts were still well nipped-up, but took...

    Roadster 1930 door fit problems

Seeing Snowbird06's door problems causes me to ask about mine which are the opposite of his. My doors never fly open and the locks and hinges are all good (new hinge pins). But if I jack a single front wheel up about 3 to4 inches, the door on the same side moves outwards (that is, moves...
