should I worry about carbon buildup

Hoping after all this work she runs nice and cool! Arizona heat certainly doesn't help

should I worry about carbon buildup

I'll give that a go. I was just most worried about loosening debris or getting dust/dirt in the cylinders. I will give the MMO a shot as well.

should I worry about carbon buildup

So, after getting my '30 running and having it overheat quickly, I have rodded and flushed the radiator. I took the head off to clean the water jackets. Now i'm wondering if I should be worried about the carbon on the valves and pistons. The car ran great when I had it running. The...

    Got 'er running!

I'll be weekend warrior'ing on this project for a bit, getting things taken care of that I know need to be done. I will be in search of a club, all the knowledge and advice here is awesome, but I can see how it would be very helpful to have someone in person to bounce ideas off.

    Got 'er running!

Mitch- Will do. I did drain it a bit, I didn't intentionally fill it that high. I just went into thinking it would take the full gallon and before I knew it, it was full. Thanks you for the link, I know I have that instruction manual somewhere. Should've dug it up and done some reading...

    Got 'er running!

I have no thermostat installed. I did put a stocking on the upper radiator hose to catch debris. The temp guage read 190. I know it was not overflled. In fact, the problem may have been it was under-filled. It had maybe a tiny amount above 2 gallons. I read after the fact that the cooling...

    Got 'er running!

Benson, I did have the spark lever fully retarded. Is that wrong? I have it all the way up when I start the car and then lowered it to about half, then after it idled for a minute or two I believe I moved it all the way down...

    Got 'er running!

I did not change ****** or rear end fluid. I changed the motor oil. I will change the others before I get it on the road anymore. I'll keep the progress posted up here as I go. Appreciate the good input everyone!

    Got 'er running!

Thanks for the advice guys. It is appreciated. I think I will be in the market for a new radiator at some point, I've seen ppl rig up air compressors with a hose to pressure wash. Might give that a try. Hoping I won't have to open up the head to try and clean it out, but if that's what it takes.

    Got 'er running!

Hello all. After, very slowly, doing a bit of work on the '30 Model A i've had handed down to me, I finally got her running today. :D I am concerned about the shape of the block/radiator when it comes to rust/scale. I've vinegar soaked both independently and have flushed them out with a hose...

    Questions before a "first" start

Brentwood Bob - I forgot to list the return pipe from the radiator, I did buy a new one along with the other various parts cooling parts. Sounds like I'm going to get creative with the old radiator hose and try to mock up a garden hose/air compressor to try and flush the engine to the best of...

    Questions before a "first" start

I hear you Slugs. I'll check the remaining fluid out. Really appreciate the guidance, I can't wait to get it roadworthy! The car actually belonged to me granddad. He did a "ground up" restore starting in the early 90's. Unfortunately, after he passed the car sat for quite a while until my...

    Questions before a "first" start

Thank you all for the helpful responses. The car was restored ~15 years ago. It's had probably less than 400 miles put on it since the restoration, then it sat for a long period of time. I drained the oil. I had plans of dropping the pan, however the oil looked brand new. Was still...

    Questions before a "first" start

Hello all, I'm happy to be the new owner of a '30 Model A. It has been sitting for the last decade or so. All the fluids were left in it. After disconnecting the old radiator hoses, I have found a lot of corrosion/rust around the coolant inlet and outlet on the head. I've ordered a new...
