    Engine noise

I replaced the crank and timing gear as they kind of chewed on each other's teeth. And unfortunately, it was knocking before the adjustments and additions. Since car starts and runs good, I will digest the various suggestions above and if no luck will readjust bearings.

    Engine noise

Thanks much, that is where I have it positioned. Perhaps I need to tighten the bearings some more. I still can turn engine over fairly easy. Should there be a slight drag? Don't want to over tighten, for sure.

    Engine noise

Don't you have to pull lever down to retard instead of all the way up? Also, hate to think of getting rid of the Nu-Rex as since installed the car starts every time, on time by simply lifting choke and letting go. I'm sort of a newcomer with this so can you help me with recognizing difference...

    Engine noise

Don't hear it at idol and I have upgraded to an auto advance unit. Gets louder when accelerating engine. Quiets down when letting off gas pedal.

    Engine noise

Need to hear from someone with a little more brain than I have. What am I missing? I replaced the crank gear with a new timing gear, meshed nice and tight. readjusted the all the main and rod bearings, removing shims in each till engine wouldn't turn and then replaced on shim. Car starts at...

    Thanks much, problem solved.

    Main crank bearing

Oh my, I'm new at this set-up and had no idea there were nuts at end of bolts. Makes sense for threads in cast block most likely would stand the 80lb torque. Now to find the nuts. You helped me with the one in valve chamber, how about the others?

    Main crank bearing

I was making reference to the center crank main which is mounted with square headed bolts.

    Main crank bearing

Only the rear main has the nuts, the center and front have square headed bolts. One of the bolts appears to be stripped. Turns very tight both ways but won't torque or spin out.

    Main crank bearing

Dropped the pan on my 29 Tudor to adjust the mains and to my surprise one of the bolts on the center cap appears to have been stripped. It is tight enough to require a heavy wrench to turn either way put will not torque and too tight to take out. Cap is tight but could be the cause of eating...

    Damaged Crank Gear

Read a suggestion on another thread that needed to remove all four side bolts from mounts. I'll try taking the one on each side first. Don't want anything to fall. Thanks much for all the helpful info,

    Damaged Crank Gear

Can I jack the front of engine up high enough to remove pully without breaking or bending anything?

    Damaged Crank Gear

The damage was done while I was driving the car. I heard the knocking and crunching sound. Went home, dropped the pan and there it was. Gear was good when I recently replaced the damaged fiber with an aluminum timing gear. I was leaning towards the steel gear as I would rather replace the...

    Damaged Crank Gear

Thanks so much with the info. Would like a bit more advice on Iron vs Steel crank gear. Some mention was made about the proper fit.

    Damaged Crank Gear

Thanks much, think I'll go with .003 fiber and steel crank gear for a better mesh and pray not much trouble getting old gear off crank. Would hurt to double check crank main clearance, as well. Keeps ya busy for sure.
