Problem with 1956 Tbird pulling hard to right

I had a similar issue with my 57 Skyliner that turned out to be a problem with the brake shoes (right to left) on the front. I had replaced the brake shoes when I first got the car and didn't notice any difference in the shoes, but the right side definitely pulled more and would lock up the...

    55 Fordomatic leaking in front

There are several possible leak points on the Fordomatic. 1) The front pump gasket and seal (which you have indicated was done) 2) The large O-ring seal between the cover and the converter housing. 3) The lip seal and o-ring seal on the transmission shift lever and throttle valve lever on...

    rocker clearance

The 57 Shop Manual specifies maximum clearance (difference between inside diameter of rocker and outside diameter of shaft) to be .006". Good Luck, Dave

    Spin-on Oil Filter for a 292 Y-block

I recently changed the oil and filter on my 1957 (312 engine, but same thread as 292). The male thread on the engine is 3/4-16 UNF fine thread). The filter thread inside diameter (you should be able to measure the filter you have) should be 0.676" to 0.697". If your filter is larger than that...

Easiest way to get my truck up to like 65 or so on the highway

Just curious, what is your engine speed on the tach when you are running 55 MPH?

Easiest way to get my truck up to like 65 or so on the highway

A good way to get exact engine RPM's (at any speed) would be to add a tachometer. The electronic tachs are easy to install and relatively inexpensive. That would be a good baseline to have to determine exactly what is going on. Reducing engine speed really comes down to reducing the overall...

Easiest way to get my truck up to like 65 or so on the highway

I have a 57 Skyliner with 312 engine and Fordomatic. It originally had a 3:56:1 rear end ratio and I changed to a 3.25:1 really to correct a 5 MPH speedometer error that I could not correct with speedometer drive gear change. The original differential also had a front seal leak and so the new...

    Slowing down a heater motor?

Does the switch you installed have a built-in resistor? In order to slow down the motor you would need to run the power through some resistance in order to slow down the motor. The switch in the link below has a built-in resistor...

Was this my AC set up?

I believe the AC Compressor mounting shown above is the same as the factory installed AC system in the 57 Models, but also the same as many dealer installed units that were hung under the dash. The factory AC units had the evaporator under the hood in an HVAC enclosure and the interior vents...

    differential gear change

The change from 2.72 to 3.25 makes comes very close to agreeing with the speedometer error. The increase in transmission/driveshaft RPM is approx. 19%, so the speedometer would increase the same. Based on that ratio, a change from 18 to 19 teeth on the driven gear would get you part way back...

    differential gear change

Sorry I got interrupted and sent the last reply prematurely. Anyway, once you have the current tooth count on the driven gear, you will need to increase the tooth count in the same ratio as the error of your speedometer. Currently your speedometer error is 58/50 or 1.16 ratio. You will need...

    differential gear change

The math in this change from 3.25 to 2.72 does not seem to agree with the change in speedometer reading. The transmission/driveshaft RPM should be running slower with the change (about 0.837 : 1) so the speedometer should be reading slower than before. Are you sure of the 2.72 ratio? Is it...

    Y block fuel pumps

Something to consider is to replace the vacuum windshield wiper motor with an electric motor kit which eliminates the need for the dual action pump. I have done that on the 312 in my current car and it works great. Only downside is losing the originality of the vacuum wiper motr. Good Luck, Dave

    Swap over to Alternator

I believe your 30 amp generator will do just fine for your driving with headlights and wipers, but if you are concerned you can do a quick and simple test by checking your battery voltage while those loads are on while engine running (you will need to boost the RPM to around 1500 or so to...
