I have had the same results as Dick. the gasket that came with my filter was not the correct diameter and would not seal. I ended up re-using the old brittle one that's been in there for who knows how long and it sealed right up.
I changed the oil today not sure what to expect. The oil that drained out of the oil pan actually looked ok. It was an odd color for sure and there was a bit of weird thick gunk that came out first. There was some think gunk at at bottom of the oil filter canister as well.
Put fresh Rotella in...
Problem fixed. I cleaned out the inside of the canister lid and put the old gasket back in. No leak. It appears the gasket that was supplied with the filter was too small diameter.
Oil pressure gauge shows around 25 at idle
I changed the oil today in my 39 truck. Previous owner did not have a filter in the housing. I added the correct filter, now U'm getting excess pressure and it is pushing oil out between the housing and lid, and I am making certain the gasket is seated properly. Any thoughts?
I can recall topping off the radiator a few weeks ago. It wasnt really low, just above the top of the fins. It has only been ran about 2 minutes since, but when I discovered this mess in the filter housing I checked the radiator and it was below the top of the fins, so there is definitely a leak.
Pulled out the compression tester and here's the results:
1- 80 psi
2- 90 psi
3- 88 psi
4- 80 psi
5- 88 psi
6- 70 psi
7- 88 psi
8- 90 psi
#6 being low, what is this telling me other than pull the heads and inspect anyhow?
Pulled the plugs, they all look the same. I shined a pen light into each plu hole while they were out and see no obvious issue. Time to dig out the ole compression tester...
My recently acquired 39 Ford truck has a 53 8ba in it. I pulled the lid off the oil filter housing to check for the correct filter and found that there was no filter at all, and even worse is that there is coolant in the oil. It does produce a bit of steam when idling at cold start, so pointing...
You are correct. i pulled out the turkey baster to pull off the oil and sure enough, there is green coolant in there! UGH.... Now, off to start a new thread...
Do, my 39 has had a transplant at one time as she has a 53 8ba in her. I'm not very rehearsed on these flathead and wondering about the oil filter setup. This pic is of the reservoir with the cap off. There is no filter in there. I assume the filter I purchased from Dennis Carpenter is correct...
Two of my wheels have slight oblonging on several of the lug nut holes. I ordered a set of these tapered washers from Joes, only to find out they are wayt too small for my application. ANyone have an idea of the correct taper and where i can find these but large enough to fit my truck...
