    strange noise in my flathead V-8

    My '40 started doing that. After disassembly I found the bearing thrust surface on the crankshaft was worn and the crank was moving back and forth. Haven't reassembled yet, but it seems to have been the only possible culprit. I know the 8BA is a different motor, but worth checking.

    rod bearings

    I have a Federal Mogul bearing cross-reference book and the 9725 SB 10 crosses to a "Packard 6" with the following Packard part numbers referenced: 335827, 358231, 341701, 362500 and 387600. The 10 after the SB likely means they are .010 u/s. I hope this helps.

    The more research I do, the more I realize how challenging the ignition is on these early V-8s. Knowing little, I'm responding assuming you have the "diving helmet" distributor versus the "crab" style or later, more modern distributor. If not, some of these things are still worth a look...

    If your wiring isn't well dressed, the harness can get in the way of the clutch and/or brake pedal, causing your lights to flicker.
