    Ticking noise

I have not tried running the engine without the starter. I may have to try that. The fan is fine. That was my first thought. The ring gear appears to be well seated. I have two questions. What keeps the pinion away from the flywheel when the engine is running? What is the purpose of the large...

    Ticking noise

I have a 1928 engine in my Model A speedster. I have an intermittent ticking noise that sounds like it is coming from the left side of the engine. It always stops when I pull into the driveway and let the engine idle. I have gone over the engine with a stethoscope but don't hear anything...

    Marvel Schebler carburettor

As I understand it thr Marvel Schebler updraft carburetor was an aftermarket replacement for the original Zenith or Tillotson. I have been using one for 10 years. They are very simple, easy to clean and adjust. They do run very well. On the downside, the diecast zinc castings tend to warp and...

    Cylinder head questions.

I am in the process of replacing the cylinder head gasket on my Model A speedster, 1928 engine. In the water passage next to no. 3 cylinder, passengers side there are 3 or 4 loose objects. They are metallic, shaped like 3 dimensional stars and are too large to be retrieved through the passage...

    Turn signal problem

Last spring I installed a NOS DoRay FlashAll 999 turn signal unit on my Model A speedster. Unit was new in the box with instructions. Flasher was included, TungSol 535. All worked well most of the summer. Then the indicator light inside the switch came on without the turn signals being...

    Running very rich

I have been working on a similar problem. At 25-30 mph the engine would start to spit out the tailpipe and the plugs were always coated with black soot. Since it started after I installed a fuel pump, the pump was blamed. The pump pressure was only 1 psi so I started troubleshooting the...

    Ignition question

I am in the process of troubleshooting my ignition system due to a running rich condition. After setting the point gap and timing I check for spark when opening the points. I do get a spark at the points but I also hear a spark in the area of the coil or terminal box. I don't find any loose...

Who sells sealed beam conversion rings

I don't know if anyone sells parts to convert to sealed beams. I bought a set that had been converted using parts from other old cars. They work fine. They do have more of a bugeye look. They do draw more current than the generator could supply so I had to go with an alternator. The sealed...

    Need help with persistent problem.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will just make a systematic list and start checking things out. I will report back if I figure it out. It may not be real soon as car show season is just starting. Have to get it cleaned up for the first one on Sunday. Fortunately this problem doesn't keep...

    Need help with persistent problem.

No air cleaner so that's out. I'm using the Marvel carburetor so it only has the one removable jet. I've thought about the valves but just turning the engine by hand feels like good compression on all four cylinders and all four spark plugs have the same soft black sooty coating. I will say...

    Need help with persistent problem.

I just tried dialing down the regulator. It didn't seem to make any difference in how the car runs, still spitting when I get up to about 30mph. I still don't understand how the pump can cause flooding if the float valve is working. And if it is not working, shouldn't there be leakage from...

    Need help with persistent problem.

Thanks for the suggestions. How much fuel pressure is too much? I installed a pressure gauge temporarily and it showed 1psi. With the engine off and the fuel pump on there is no leakage from the carburetor. I assume this means the float valve is closing and not being forced open by the pump...

    Need help with persistent problem.

The main jet is what was in the carburetor. I start the engine with GAV one turn open and dial it down. At 1/4 turn open it loses power so I have been leaving it about 1/2 turn open. Howie
