    '36 temp gauge

the red fluid in my temp gauge rose to "half mast" on its own with the engine cold. and then it rose nearly to the top of the glass tube, again on its own. all this with the engine cold. when the engine is warm, the fluid rises all the way to the top of the tube. or at least above the opening...

shaft seal - which side toward the oil??

guess you can have it both ways. some guy named whistlepig has this to say Spring matters not. Lip in for oil. Lip out for grease. If a grease bearing is over greased the only place for it to relieve is through the lip in the seal. If lip out the grease can seep through. If lip in it the...

shaft seal - which side toward the oil??

Oil shaft seals no longer have a ”spring side.” How do I determine which side is the oil side? I’m replacing the seal at the front of a ‘36 ****** [part no. 7052]. The original leather seal had the spring [and lip] towards the oil. Modern seals have no obvious lip side. To me anyway. One side...

    Horn capacitor

bad wording on my part. I said "1936 example" only because I have a 1936 horn. but all 3 pics show the points open. I can only get the '36 horn to work by setting the points closed. maybe the points are set open in the '40 horn? with the points open, DC current will flow thru the resistor...

    Horn capacitor

thanks JSeery. the 1936 example does show the cap in series with the coil. which made no sense until I closed the points. and got the horn to work. so I think I answered my new second question about the points having to be closed. but maybe you can confirm that for me.

    Horn capacitor

any idea why the horn has a capacitor? after a little homework, I found that it buffers the points like in the distributor. are the points normally closed? thanks.

7 wire turn signal switch problems?

curious. the EL-13 i bought at autozone [novita brand] is sturdy with a coil, capacitor and solid copper framework. and it has a see-thru plastic can. the pic on the right looks very much like the modern 550 i bought. altho mine has a PNP transistor [9012L] and will drive a few milli amps...

7 wire turn signal switch problems?

i discovered that an EL-13 flasher uses a design much like tom's, altho it does require a load of at least one bulb to operate. unless your switch unit grounds the coil as does tom's. at least that how i read the diagram. i tried a modern no. 550 flasher, but the pilot light wouldn't come...

7 wire turn signal switch problems?

for tom Wesenberg tom, on the chance you see this 3 years after your post, why do you need the 130 ohm resistor on your flasher? thanks. bob
