Excuse this long post. It is a summary of a few years.
About 3 years ago we bought a Ford Model A. As you can see from my signature line, we have a lot of experience with older (but nothing as old as a Model A) cars. My wife and I do all the maintenance and keep all of them in top notch running...
Smile. Answer the same questions the same way you did 30 minutes ago. Be proud. If you don't like it, buy a Camry. I get it with all my fun cars. The below commandments for Ferrari owners apply to us as well (except for driving on race tracks)...
Ok. I thought I'd post a follow-up. First - Thank You to all of you who helped. Second - I have to send a big shout out to Mike's "A" Ford-able Model A Parts.
I pulled the distributor and the intermediate shaft groove did not look too good. So, I ordered upper & lower shafts along with...
Thanks all for the information. Looks like a consensus. I'm going to attack the timing again on Saturday and while I'm at it - make sure the throttle has full travel. Luckily I'm only about 25 minutes from Mike's so getting a thermostat is fast and easy (and cheap). When done, I'll post results...
I'm getting confused over my working on my Model A (late '28) and the engine. When I got the car, it would only go 25 mph and backfire. My wife and I have been slowly going over everything to fix it. But have stalled in our efforts to make it a reliable driver.
Thus far:
Ignition system...
I don't do anything special. I don't lock the car (I've even accidentally left the key in the ignition since that is where I keep it at home). So few people can drive a manual transmission that to think that a theif would know how to start a Model A and then drive it would be a rare thing...
Just a follow-up to close the thread. Thanks to all the help from everyone. Spring replaced. Model A started on first attempt perfectly. Idles nicely. Now working on adjusting the carburetor. As per usual - the only short cut I took rebuilding the carb was not touching the throttle plate so...
Look very closely at the points and make sure they really are closed. Mine did same and turned out that they looked closed but they were not quite. Light flickered but did not go out.
I use it in every forum just because it is easy. I started using it years ago in a forum where there was a lot of discussion of wanting pictures of the members. Driving a convertible in the mountains with my wife by my side is a great activity so I used a picture she took of me during a club...
I was lucky. I had the post Oct 1928 spring. Easy to find. I'm less than 25 min from Mikes. Either cheap and fast mail or a quick trip up the road if I can find time during business hours.
Should be trying to start again Wednesday.
