I think I got it figured out. I replaced the coil and also backed the ignition wire out if the distributor about half a turn (I think it was shorting out on the bottom plate). I drove it around for about 20 mins, ran great! Thanks for all the input guys.

I am using an external resistor mounted on the firewall. The original 6v wiring was a mess in the car and it had a 6v alternator set up. Looking back I would have probably just kept everything 6v but I wasn't too sure of the alternator plus I thought I had everything I needed to make the conversion.

Recently rewired my 29 roadster to twelve volt. New points, new condenser but older coil (culprit I suspect) the car starts great, runs fine for a few miles, then when good and warmed up it dies. No backfiring, no sputtering almost like it runs out of gas. Can those be symptoms of a failing coil?
