Thank you for the responses. I guess I am still trying to know what fails Bad. The primary of the coil or the secondary winding for the high voltage to the spark plugs. I can still read 1.5 ohms on the primary.
Changed my 1940 flathead to 12 volt system. The ignition coil purchased had a 1.5 ohm primary resistance. I bypassed the original ballast resistor and wired the coil directly from the ignition switch. Some of the threads indicated the total resistance to the coil should be 3 ohm total...
Thank you for the responses. I fully understand using points instead of electronic device. Hopefully the new MALLORY distributors are more reliable. We will see when installed correctly.
As as backing off, do you mean decreasing the advance or increasing the advance. If you are backing off does...
I purchased a Mallory 3772101 Unilite Electronic distributor for my 1940 Ford Flathead. The instructions were a little vague. Called for tech help and they just install distributor and adjust by sound for timing. I am sure you guys can do better than that and have experience. I have no top dead...
To Ford38v8 and CharlieNY.
I operated throttle at carb. No squirts. Removed air horn and the bowl was completely dry. Checked gas flow at the carb and it was OK. When actuating the float the shut off valve did not move. It is either stuck open or closed.
At this point because the carb is over...
Again, thank you gentlemen. I am afraid I may have confused some. I poured gasoline and sprayed acetone in the throat of the carb not the intake manifold. I will try as a neophyte as Ford38v8 suggested.
Again thanks for the response. As I said previously the electric fuel pump is supplying fuel to the carb. I checked the spark with an inline spark checker on plug 1 and it was working. After spraying the acetone and putting gasoline in the carb throat no sputtering even. Checked the number one...
Gentlemen, thank you for responding. I sprayed acetone and poured gasoline in the carburetor throat. It didn't even fire up or start. I checked the number one spark plug after this and it was completely dry. My next step will be to have the carburetor repaired I assume since it does not appear...
Electric fuel pump provides fuel to carburetor. Put inline spark checker on plug 1 and saw spark was occurring. Possibly dirty carburetor. Tried gum out in carburetor throat. I am considering removing carb and have a professional clean or send to MAC for a rebuild.comments
Purchased MAC gas sending unit in 2013. Worked fine. Changed 1940 Ford to 12 volts with constant voltage reducers worked fine. Recently gas gauge indicated empty always. Checked voltage on unit at 5.5 volts and OK. Ordered new MAC gas sending unit. Removed old gas sending unit and notice the...
Purchased Mac Gas Tank Sending Unit. Worked for a while even after changing to 12 volt electric with 12 volt to 6 volt reducer for gauges. Now always reads empty with about 5 1/2 volts on the unit. Read all the Drake Flack. Is there a good alternative to the MAC sender. Seems to be universal...
Thanks for the quick response and information. I read the other posts on where to measure to get a more accurate measurement of the water temperature which is probably the most important rather than the engine block
My 1940 Ford flathead temperature gauge reads middle in winter and hot in summer. Engine does not overheat. Thermostats are 160 degree. Need way to measure engine block temperature more accurately???
